Black Friday: Desktop PC & More

... people equate price with quality way too much. If it costs more, it must be so much better. That's the fallacy that enables brand names to sell a pair of jeans for $500. If I'm able to buy a complete setup for $500... how much MORE will I get out of a system that costs 5 times as much? I doubt I'll get 5 times the value out of it.

I agree with ya on that man. People pay so much for a brand, sometimes it's worth it for better quality but mostly you're just paying for the name.

Is eBay not competitive in the US? Over here no-one can compete with the prices on eBay, but then personally I'd rather have a better second hand item than an inferior new one and for PCs really don't care about warranties. (RTB in particular is more hassle than it's worth.)

Not looked at PC's for a while, but in the last year I bought an ex-demo fully guaranteed core2duo on eBay (from the same small company my stepdad bought an Atari ST from years back) for £100/$200 less than the equivalent on even the cheapest sites. I picked up a Vaio laptop too for £200 - more than happy to pay for the brand/quality there - it's a great little machine and better quality and spec than anything that retails at the same price.

I despise eBay and their business practices, but can't argue with the choice and price. Even the stuff from the big guys like Dell on there is so much cheaper than their retail prices. I hate using eBay... but no one has come up with a better alternative yet.

I ended up going with the 2 19" inch monitors from newegg. That review of the 22" really put me off, so I didn't feel like risking it because neweggs return policy on a LCD monitors is a bitch. The reviews of the 19" monitors put me more at ease. Yeah...I'm a pussy.

Just bought 2 acers 22". Thanks radio.

Cool. That will be a ton of workspace! Glad the info helped. And I believe RockDiesel is talking about the 22" mentioned way above and not the one I pointed out. Correct me if I'm wrong - but the one I pointed out had lots of reviews, almost all positive... but $30 more.

Come on guys, what's wrong with ya? Got 2 PCI-e slots? Get 4 monitors!

Seriously, the productivity jump from 2 to 3 is at least as big as from 1 to 2 (the 4th, take it or leave it really but very useful sometimes).

I should upgrade really for the sake of my eyes, but I love my 3 x 21" (oldskool 3:4 CRT) setup + a 19" LCD on top of one of the old lumps. :)

I just bought one myself. Looks like a winner!

Just buy MacPro Quad-Core.. works great :)

I wonder if Apple does any discounts.. my gf needs a need ipod nano.

Look into the HP Elite series. Had some nice deals back whenever I bought mine for about $800. Quad core, 512 mb video ram, 1TB harddisk space, 4 GB ram, TV tuner, HD DVD drive, lightscribe DVD multidrive, 15:1 card reader, and a whole shit load of bells and whistles for under 800 bucks. Only works with Vista tho so thats kinda poopy. Still runs everything like Sex though.
