This also is not a rehash of the warrior forum post you are refering to as I have had a lot of input on that post myself, this is the actual system that I use, the warrior forum post actually more about gaining a client for this method via a direct mailing!

Can you link me to the thread posting about the direct mail method? I like this idea and I am formulating a way to tackle it. Although I think a direct mail approach might be a better way to get the message to businesses for me since my verbal sales skills are below par.

sounds expensive and something that will get file 13'd. even if you send out a glossy amazing print piece - if you can't sell it when talking to them, you're just wasting monies. get your verbal chops up to speed, son, if you want to sell!
 
If you're making $1500 per sale (plus $250/month or whatever) you can afford to hire a proper salesman on $500/sale commission to go out and generate business for you. Bonus for them, bonus for you.
 
I used to work in the production room of a community newspaper, and know that you can get space in a local paper for about $25 for a decent sized ad. They'll even do the graphics for you in the art department, and you can use the ad to pitch to the local businesses. They're all hungry for cash nowadays, and would appreciate the miracle of mass marketing without the postal costs.

Advertising space is even cheaper when you approach religious groups which often have newsletters distributed to members. Elders of churches and temples tend to be business owners and it would be easy enough to establish a personal relationship with them.
 
some people are saying that $250/mo is a lot for a small business, but I don't think that's true. Believe it or not, I've worked at a few places where the business owners paid $100 to have their site submitted to Google "and 20 other search engines." It was one of those direct mail campaigns you get like Domain Registry of America.

On top of that, one of the owners who paid was previously a successful programmer, working for a huge company in NY and with a masters in CS. You'd think he'd know that you can submit your site to google for free, and about SEO, but thinking about it, it doesn't make sense for him to know that stuff. It's not in his field, even if he had a phD in CS.

This idea is gold, but 99% of people won't go through with it just because they're afraid of dealing with people face to face or by phone.

Instead of going direct, could you leverage your time by going to the trusted advisors of small business owners? Instead of doing a bunch of outbound cold calling, can you get potential customers to call you?

Who do small business owners go to when they have problems? Who do small business owners trust? Lawyers, accountants, tax guys, bookkeepers, bankers, Chamber of Commerce memberships, web developers, etc. Show these gatekeepers how great your services are, and they will unlock a lot of new business for you.

In my po-dunk town of Bel Air, MD, there are 20 gyms, 48 florists, 20 professional photographers, 8 pet shops, 5 cigar dealers, 344 attorneys, 65 bookkeepers, 41 accountants, 30 web developers, 52 real estate brokerages, 22 real estate appraisers, and the list goes on and on.

I have used this "talk to gatekeepers" method for raising private financing for real estate ventures. Within 3 months, I was able to get $500,000 from people's savings accounts at 10% to invest in property. It works.

the idea of offline + online marketing in itself is brilliant, it`s just the convincing part that`s hard, lot`s of scammers in this area that might make it a little harder for ppl to trust your business

If you do the following locally, it's a LOT easier to get the right customers.

1. Join local Chamber of Commerce. It's ~$500/year but the mixers/parties/ribbon cuttings/newsletters are priceless tools that get your name in front of TONS of businesses.

2. Join a community service organization such as Sertoma, Knight of Columbus, or whatever you have in your community. Even though it's a service organization, 80% of these people do it for the business networking.

3. Rank the fuck out of the localized keywords. If you can show a guy that you not only outrank his own website for his main keywords, but did it in short order and would be willing to put his lander content on the page, he's a LOT more inclined to do offline/online marketing projects with you.
 
#3 on bb_wolfe's list is killer. And it's easy. A lot of local business owners still don't understand what keywords they should rank for and actually expect that people are looking for them by their name. It's largely a vanity thing. So outranking them for their own name definitely gets their attention. And if ever there was a low competition keyword, that's it.
