When you meet a new girl... and she asks what you do...

I had to answer the same question once more yesterday, a girl I met asked me what do I do.
I still haven't found the perfect response that does not trigger further questions, but lately I say "I run ads on the internet".

Just make up different stuff every time. I think one time I invented a special defense system for NASA satellites.

how about "I own a marketing company" or "I own an advertising company" and when they ask you the inevitable clarifying question, you say "primarily we run ads on the internet, through major search engines like Google and social networks like Facebook"

that gives a pretty clear picture, paints you as a business owner, and the person can understand google and facebook.

you should be in clear motorboatin' territory after that
 
Girl: What do you do?
Me: "You know those weight loss ads you see on facebook?"
Girl: Yea?
Me: "Looks like you should click on one of them"

"I run my own company"

They ask oh really what is it about, what do you do?

You Say "I do online advertising and marketing".

They then may say "Oh really how do you do that"

You then say "By building websites"

They then say "oh cool"

And there is a job well done, now you move onto how big her boobs are (However that last part still needs a bit of split testing)

"I'm an Affiliate Manager."

"What is that?"

"I take the ads from the advertisers and give them to the affiliates."

"So you put ads up online?"

"Not really no... The affiliates do that."

"So you work with the advertisers directly?"

"Well, not usually... I get them from my advertising team that gets them from a broker."

*Scratching their head*

"So what would you say it is that... you do?"

"I already told you: I deal with the god damn affiliates so the advertisers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!?"

Pretty much how it goes. I think ive met 1 person in my life (locally) who actually understood. My g/f who I was with forever still doesn't understand what I do online

My extended family have been told (from others in my family) "I sell stuff" on the internet:

Them: So what do you sell on the internet?
Me: Whatever I want, mostly diet shit.
Them: So what do you sell on the internet?
Me: [long explanation]

To Others I don't know, and none of my freinds are directly around:

Them: What do you do?
Me: Online Marketing.
Them: Huh? What's that?
Me: You ever notice on the side of the page on like google, yahoo, msn, facebook how there are ads? Yeah, that's me.
Them: [don't really understand] Oh.

OR

Me: I do web-design.
Them: For who?
Me: Myself or whomever needs it done.
[etc..]

When someone asks and my friends are around:

Them: What do you do?
Friends: He owns a PORN SITE!
Me: [face palm] Well yes...
Them: You must be rollin in the dough!
Me: No it was an experiment on creating a porn website that updates itself, it doesn't make a dime. There are way too many like it.
Them: Wow have you ever made any porn?!
Me: No. [face-palm]
[etc...]
