Just starting PPC, are email/zip submits the way to go?

Not as simple as it sounds. You need to actually know Adwords quite well so you can keep your bids low enough to profit of them. If you're bidding above 20 cents a click on Adwords for a email/zip submit, then you will have a negative ROI. Most preferred that you get a 10 cent CPC, which is difficult to attain for a newbie.

Ignore horseshit breath above. Polls are an OK way to start and you can make money, but here's the gotchas:
1. Polls require a shit-ton of testing, and you may spend $500 over a few days/hours before you break even with a good poll. Finding the right placements and scaling it out will give you some long term profits.
2. CPC, as cuntface above alluded to, needs to be really, really, really low to start. Understand how Googles ad ranking system and ad quality score works to your advantage.By starting with a $.15 Max CPC, you will boost your ad's initial rank, but moreover a good quality score will usually keep you on page 1. Drop the CPC by a penny each time you optimize until it's sitting at .10 CPC Max.
3. Poll Landing Page. This to me is the biggest challenge to conversions. Make it look like a cool lander, use lots of graphics and reiterate the offer visually. Your goal is to get as high of a CTR as possible, and get those folks to that Email submit. Make sure you specify they need to enter their email to get the 'prize' or whatever.
4. Have some cash. Start with $1000 so you don't get flustered when you've spent $500 and only have $250. Using the data you generate, the other $500 will break you even.
You're very first line "Polls require a shit-ton of testing", already gives away that this isn't the right niche to start out with. Not to mention that he has to deal with rotating submits in and out so they don't start scrubbing. It's simply not something for someone starting out.
There are offers that require less testing, less risk and less knowledge to run successfully.

It is simple for someone starting out to run polls, but you wouldn't understand that. I would imagine running an affiliate network scam is SOOO much easier. Funny thing, in 2008, poll profits sent me to 3 really nice conferences totalling $10K in expenses.
In 2009, I've budgeted 4 conferences, all with pricetags over $2500 each, with poll profits from 2008.

For the record, I've seen what this guy is doing in a few other industries, and it's always the same shit. Some dude comes out of fucking nowhere (or in ROIShare's case, even digitalpoint banned him) and spends an obscene amount of time helping the shirtless masses in some form. Once he gains the trust of the ignorant, he runs some scam (like a fake aff network) and then fucking disappears. He's 20, so he's a near total stranger to the world outside his parent's house and though he may have made a few bucks in AM, he has no clue that anyone is on to his scam, which is the sad part.
Next thing he'll say is that once he has peach fuzz on his berries, he's coming to ASE and is going to beat me up and steal my lunch money. I hope he does. Russian Mafia Guy tried, didn't work too well.
