LCD monitor as TV

I have a 22inch monitor (it's HDCP compliant) with a DVI input in the back. My HD cable box has a HDMI output that I'm not using. In theory I should be able to just use a HDMI to DVI cable to connect the monitor to the cable box and it should work, right? This is the cable I would order: Newegg.com - Link Depot 10 ft. HDMI To DVI Cable, Black Model HDMI-DVI-3 - Cables

Unless I'm completely missing something I don't see why this shouldn't work. I need a small TV in my bedroom and spending $11 on a cable is a lot cheaper than buying a $300+ television.
 


For $11, why not try it?

It'll work fine, but for some inexplicable reason current widescreen monitors are 16:10 and TVs are 16:9.

1080 on a TV is 1920x1080, max resolution on most widescreen monitors that size is 1680x1050, larger ones are 1920x1200.

So, depending on how you configure the output it's going to have some dark border or be stretched.
 
Read what TakinthePlunge said and if your cable box requires HDCP then you need to make sure the monitor you're looking at buying will work.

Also, if you want to be super cheap and grab some other cable(s) at the same time or just cut even more off the cost of that DVI-to-HDMI then check out monoprice.com - most of their cables are priced at a couple bucks at most.

The monitor is hdcp compliant (see first post) and I've got a big credit with newegg, so it'll be free (the cable).

I've got speakers hooked up to the box now.
 
I'm using an old 19" lcd monitor, computer speakers, and an external kworld tuner for the bedroom. It ain't anything great, but its fine for watching the news and stuff. I also hooked up a MediaCenter extender to it, so I can watch any videos,shows, and stuff from my MediaCenter collection.
