MUST HAVE: Keep tabs on your website uptime

No, having 20 servers ping your server is simply a case of OCD. Like needing to triple check you switched the lights off in the house before you left. And there are another important considerations:

My script is free to use forever - Whereas you need to pay every single month.

My script is easy to add more urls to - Whereas you have to repeatedly deal with irritating GUI's and login to multiple locations

If you really do get a lot of random downtime it means the uptime "servers" (aka 128mb ram VPS's) the monitoring sites are using all cost < $20 bucks p/m. What do you expect. Of course a few will lose network connectivity every now and then. Anyway I've explained the benefits and the reasoning of why having a zillion sources is not required - but also how you can achieve that effect with this script if you suffer from mild OCD.

It's not a matter of being too paranoid, but a matter of being paranoid enough. And besides he didn't mention more than 4 services, all of which are not dependent on the hosting of your own site. And pinging does jack shit, the server itself could be up, but the http daemon could be down with a memory overload, or the mailserver could be down and pinging would claim it's up. Also if the webserver is down... how will your script notify the user?

And if its just a matter of tracking downtime or problems... there is the raw access laws plus a number of stats scripts for free, typically built into most hosting providers.

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, it doesn't do an almost-pointless "ping" of the server. It checks httpd is running. Actually, it does more, it checks the web pages (which can reside on the same server send a 200 OK request). With that functionality you can check if your actual individial web pages or websites on the same server are running - not just Apache in general. The script emails users.

Regarding "if the server is down how will the server contact the user", you can run this script from two locations if required. But running it on shared hosting is just fine - I get my email notifications on the dot every hour running on my $4 a month shared hosting.

Please actually read the thread before asking these questions. Also this isn't a "downtime tracker", its a downtime notifier so you can get stuff fixed asap. Although you could easily get a good idea of the length of downtime with this script.

For a $3 script, it looks to do a pretty good job. We are not talking about a multiple redundancy hosting grade monitoring service here.

Put it on a hosting account/server that already has its own quality monitoring, and use it to keep track of other accounts.

I would rather use it than a free siteuptime account since you can put in as many sites as you want. The free siteuptime limits you to 1 site monitored.

Cheers Carl.

And yeah it definitely beats shitty free uptime services that let you monitor like 3 websites. I have over 200.

Same here, spread out over tons of different hosting accounts of varying quality. Like I said before, I don't really do a good job of keeping track of them all, and I cant be fucked signing up for 100 free siteuptime accounts.

The only thing I'd love to see this script do better is not send mail when all the sites are up. I don't really need an email every hour telling me all the sites are up, I only want to know when something is down.

I can arrange that.

I've actually wanted to do this for myself too, it just doesn't really affect me as I have a Mozilla Thunderbird email rule which lets the "everything is ok" emails go to a special folder for archiving so I never see them.

Let me get another sale or two and I'll go tweak the script and send you a copy.

Why would you want your inbox filled up with useless status updates? How about reporting when the site is down? .. SMS would probably be more practical than email...

I have a folder it all goes to. Setting up an email rule is easy so I never see the "everything is ok" emails, only the "site is down" ones. I just like it because it gives me verification its running ok. I will modify the script though to include an option so you can set if you only want an email when a site is down.

Anyone who buys now will get the update. So PM me for my PayPal.

I make my living online so I think spending $30 a month for reliable monitoring by a third party that notifies me by email, SMS or even voice calls (websitepulse.com) is a safer bet.

/2cents

If you have only a couple of sites then using a monitoring service is fine. Websitepulse looks like it can get real expensive real quick for anyone with a bigger portfolio like myself. But to each their own if it makes you sleep better.

My script is rock solid as I've personally used it for years without issue. Dare I say more reliable than many paid uptime monitor services. Only downfall is no SMS, but for fulltime aff marketers like myself, we are at a PC most of the day.

Hey everyone. I think I've answered all questions, stupid and intelligent.

I am no longer monitoring this thread. If you want this script just PM me. Even if it's 2012. PM me all questions.

Summary of Uptime Monitoring Script:
- Can monitor unlimited sites
- Will email you status
- Can check every minute, or once a day - up to you
- Lightweight, run off shared hosting
- Extremely Reliable

If you are a coder you could code this yourself, but know you will spend at least 8 hours (if you are good) to get it to the level this script is at, or you can buy it for $6.

A lot of guys on here are banging on about I need loads of servers monitoring my one server.

Agreed makes sense.

However this script costs a measley $3. Why not add it to your arsenal. Just gives you a little more choice.
