When you're getting data for that $120, it's not wasting money. But, if you're not split-testing multiple LPs and ads, you are wasting. Kinda simple, right?

Try split testing with direct linking. Sometimes lp isn't converting as much as direct linking for some reasons. Use G optimizer with analytics(assuming ur with adwords)/pixel. Depends on types of keywords(buying mode) and preselled landingpage though.

How do you ST with G-optimzer direct linking & LP since the conversion page isn't on the same server?

Without meaning to give you a serious case of information overload here, don't forget about a bunch of the other psychological factors involved in conversions, such as the time of day that people are browsing.

For instance, people that browse between 9:00 and 11:00 are generally just fucking around and trying to waste time, instead of doing their jobs, but they're not really in a buying mood... At least, that's what I've found when I've checked my stats by the hour.

You may want to learn about "day parting" your ads.

100% correct. you could have spent $200 to make $80 during the morning...but that same $200 could have MADE you $500 at night...different demographics and different mindstates.

Excellent Information.

And to top that off, because of my stupidity....

I had content network running during that time which brought in a massive flurry of clicks fast, (when I also didnt have the tracking working properly) so the conversions could have came from content or search....But I dont know. Total noob mistake.

That being said, I turned content off since my costs were piling up quickly and rapidly between content & search. It literally jumped in a few short minutes about $100 bucks in cost.

No conversions since the morning. Spending has slowed a bit. CTR is still decent.

Could there be something to be said about the content network in this case?
Everything I've read and learned tended to have me shy away from the content network.

Content network is a huge pain in the ass to test with because of the lag in stats reporting, but it can definitely be worth persisting with it. Like you said, you have to watch it like a hawk as it can tend to be a run-away train (which can be either very good, or a nightmare).

One thing that's worked for me is to run a CN campaign for a day (or few hours, depending on the spend), then go back and run a placement report to see what sites on the CN performed well. Take those sites and put them into a separate campaign with site placement targeting. That alone is worth throwing (investing) some cash into CN testing.

On a side note, the adwords Conversion Optimizer (once your campaigns are eligible) has worked out well on a number of occasions...

I've kept myself busy every evening, and this weekend will be no different. I've got plans crammed into every minute of every day that I'll be home

40% ROI? I'd take it any day. ROI is ROI - enjoy it.

Any day. Starting with $3,000 and weekly wires you could get a yearly ROI of over 2,000% on that cash using the same $3/week - over $60k/year (without compounding).

I'd love to see any investment guru pull that kind of return on any other type of investment.

you can't....weakest thing ever...not even sure why google requires the final page to be on the same server.
If you have access to both servers ( which I'm 90% sure you don't ), the LP and conversion page can be on different domains entirely.

How does the __utmLinker and __utmLinkPost functions work? (posted 8/8/2008)

However, like I said, you probably don't, so don't worry about it ;)

On that note, if anyone has any website optimizer/analytics questions, PM me and I'll work for adwords/adcenter voucher codes :)

I pulled the plug on this.
I dont know, as a somewhat beginner, I burned through another bit of cash and only converted one more offer.

According to prosper, the last conversion came from the content network. And I have a feeling the first two did as well.

Not too much of a loss but still a loss.
Moving on to a new offer.
