Dual Monitors Bad For Eyes?

I told my optometrist I spend 14-16 hours a day on a computer on average, and she said there wasn't any link between deteriorating vision and looking at monitors. I still have perfect sight and I've been doing this for as far back as I can remember. The only thing that I'm having a hard time correcting is not having a slouch.. sometimes I'm in my car and I have to remind myself like 10 times to sit straight, because I just keep morphing into my bad posture.

Pretty much how I sat for the last 15 years..

I just have to rep this drawing. I can't stop laughing! Excellent!

Hilarious drawing!

Seriously though, get a nice chair and put a couple pillows in it. It helps you sit straight up and also pretty damn comfortable.

Yeah, a good chair is more important than two monitors.

I also agree on the "monitors don't cause bad eyesight". Eye strain, yes. Bad eyesight is hereditary and is also one of the nasty side effects of aging.

Another point to consider is this; NEVER run a LCD monitor in anything but its native resolution. Otherwise you are interpolating odd numbers of pixels into even ones and everything is much less crisp, especially text. It will appear blurry and will be harder to read because it always looks out of focus, even if it is bigger

For example, if you try to run in 1280x1024 resolution on a monitor with a native resolution of 1600x1200 it will look really crappy.

that pic is hilarious. I have the same problem with slouching in the car.

vision has to do more with genetics more than it does with displays. After you're 21 your vision doesn't change much

dual 30s = eye strain, neck strain, and waste of $$$. (if you're young and gay, then spend that 2k on a NEC or EIZO 30. At least you'll be getting a quality 30 instead of a monitor made by chinamans in the communist country of mao republic.)

Also, you know you're not that busy or important to have a dual 30 setup and getting it will only district you from being productive. Do yourself a favor, donate that $2000 to charity and do not purchase that piece of homodump mac cinema 30 garbage with uneven backlighting. It is true, all cinema 30 displays have it, just retards like you buying mac monitors never notice because you're all novality users and not professionals that actually demand the color accuracy or real estate.

P.S. I love macs (ask nickycakes) and have more mac products than your entire family tree combined. I just hate how apple is slacking on quality control, especially with their montiors.

I actually have two 30 inch screens hooked up. Here is my advice:

Don't just sit in the middle of the two screens (like most people do with smaller screens) This will give you HUGE eye strain. Sit directly in front of one screen and have the 2nd 30 on the side. I dunno exactly why... but this reduces strain big time.

Is it worth it?

Hell YA!!! forget 50% increase in productivity... think 400%... here is why:
Imagine having dreamweaver, photoshop, web browser, FTP all open at once. This allows you to just throw things around really fast.

For regular stupid work you get a 50% increase. For affiliate campaign building and optimizing its more like 400%.

I uploaded a pic of my setup so you can see what i mean by having one 30 on the side. Btw samsung 30's are better then the apple screens.

Where the hell do you put your feet? looks like everything is blocked off from the bottom. DOESN'T LOOK LIKE YOUR INVESTED MUCH IN ERGONOMICS MY FRIEND!

agreed. concord has about 90 macs too.

I'm running a 25.5" Samsung, a 22" Samsung, Notebook and 32" TV hooked up to that. Productivity is fucking rocking off this shit.

Apple monitors are bright as fuck. Only stick with them if you are worried about color accuracy. If you aren't big into design or shit, it won't matter. Samsungs matte screens are fucking class!

The new LED display only has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a shockingly bad pixel timing of 14ms. The 30 inch cinema has an even worse 700:1 contrast ration and an even worse pixel timing of 16ms. It's so bad Apple doesn't even mention this on their website.

They are outclassed in contrast and timing by just about every manufacturer out there, with the likes of Dell, Samsung, HP, Viewsonic and more producing large monitors with contrasts up to 3000:1 and pixel timing in the 2-6ms range.

The colour argument is bullshit since the LCD panels all use similar technology and produce more or less the same gamut. When put side by side in product comparisons with the likes of Dell and HP the colour differences are negligible and the performance gains of their competitors usually means they lose the fight.

Even if they performed as well as the competition, they are still way over priced.

Apple displays are long overdue for an upgrade.

Even if I was big into design I wouldn't buy an expensive monitor for that reason, the people viewing your designs aren't going to have one...

It becomes important if anything you ever work on will show up in print somewhere. Print/Screen colour accuracy is a nightmare

And you end up needing something like this: Eizo cg301 that sets you back 5k or so...

Its a bad angle.. the table goes out a foot in front of everything. There is more then enough space for my feet.

And please stop talking about stuff you don't understand. First why would an affiliate marketer give a crap about color accuracy. Its not a fucken print shop. I can have the most accurate colors in the world... but most people will see them differently anyway.. because their screens are not calibrated.

Two 30 inch screens are not for everyone. If they give you strain and make you less productive... doesn't mean its the same for everyone.

I know a guy doing a million a week in AM with a fucken laptop... and they love it.

Everyone's work flow is different.

I agree that the apple screens are crappy and overpriced tho. I got mine for a lot less and they have a lot of adjustment options the apple screens don't.

I said if they did care about color accuracy, they should consider getting a NEC or Eizo. Not to mention once you go with a google monitor with color gamut above 97%, anything lower does not compare.

I'm running with a 25.5" Samsung as my primary screen also. It seems to be the perfect sized monitor.

22" and 24" just a bit too small... 27" and 30" too big.
