So I've been transferring sites to a new server and hubby decides to take a look at one of them. He calls from work to tell me it's not showing the front page images. I look at it on all 4 computers at home and it's fine. I refresh the pages, it's fine. Finally we figure out it's the different browsers (He uses IE at work, I only use FF) so then I'm like holy shit maybe it doesn't have to do with the server move at all. So I look at a site that's still on the old server and sure enough in IE the images are just those annoying fucking red Xs

so I'm thinking it has to do with the sizing or tables or something in IE but I can't think of what. These in the picture are just 167x257.

Here's what I can't get over. I forgive myself for being a design/programming retard as it's just not my thing. But HELLO look at me all wrapped up in my too cool for school FF world when like 80 % of the joe sixpack public out there uses IE. Rule # 1 Know your freakin audience. What NOOB I am will forever be. :(

Anyway, can anyone clue me in one what's going on in IE?

IE is not standards compliant, so it could be any of a hundred things :-(

Can you post the source for that subsection? That will give us an idea of what could be going wrong.

Yeah I have learnt this lesson the hard way, always check your sites in the big three:
FF, IE, Safari

And if you have the time or it is a new launch/big change
FF 2 & 3, IE 6 & 7 & 8, Safari, Opera, Chrome
 
Those wouldn't happen to be .ico files are they? I didn't realize, until the other day that IE is the only browser that doesn't display favicons in html.

Another quirky IE(8) bug ... when you download ANY .xls file it pops up a login box that there is no correct id/pw for. Canceling shows the excel spreadsheet in it's entirety.

Won't work with FF:Mac naturally.

Far as standards compliant, I don't think any browsers truly are. Only Safari 4 right now fully supports CSS3 (as of its current reference). And least IE8 is a lot closer than IE7 was.

Red x in IE is not going to have anything to do with the xhtml/css layout or such. Rather its going to be something with the files directly.

1) the paths may not be written correctly ('not every browser treats relative paths the same, ie src="images/file.jpg" and "./images/file.jpg" may technically be the same, but the later may not always be understood).

2) the encoding of the file may not be supported.

3) when you moved the files you may have corrupted some of the files (like copying jpegs in ASCII mode instead of binary), some browsers may attempt to parse the data anyways but some will bitch about it not being properly formated.

Try to load the images up directly in IE by going to their exact path on the server, if the image loads then its probably #1.

Most people wouldn't save ico files at 167x257, and even fewer even know how to save an .ico file for the favicon purpose.

You are right of course, but IE is usually the one for me that ends up being the biggest PITA when I am trying something new. It's JS idiosyncrasies mixed with it's mishandling of forms with multiple submit buttons become frustrating.

All that aside you are correct, good advice

Turns out I had one to many "/" in the code. Apparently FF is able to say, Ok I know what this dumbass is TRYING to say. 1357th reason why the world should be using FF.

Edit: It's going to be interesting to see how this affects my conversions now on that particular website. *facepalm*
 
You would think by now FF would have taken over IE, what the fuck is wrong with people, no wonder I'm getting rich selling bullshit penis pills & hoodia! the intelligence of this world saddens me greatly.

No the world should use FF because it's good for them. However I would prefer the world not use FF because it's not good for me ( as a greyhat AM). Except it would have been nice in this scenario. Oh the paradox.

EDIT: I just realized sticks said essentially the same thing I did, only with a little more...pizazz.
 
Even though I use FF, there's really not a lot wrong with IE7... and I'm sure IE8 will be even better, though it has less than 2% user base so far.

IE6 is the new Netscape though. What a piece of shit that browser is and unfortunately it's still in use by like 17% of web surfers, either those too stupid to figure out how to upgrade, those using pirated copies of Windows or those unfortunates living in the corporate world stuck with IE6 based on policy or because they are using a pre XP OS. Poor fuckers.

Browser Statistics

You really should have an install of each of IE6, IE7, FF, Safari and Opera on your machines to test your sites in. You should also be validating your sites (The W3C Markup Validation Service or Dreamweaver) and checking them for browser compatibility errors (something Dreamweaver does remarkably well btw).

Those would be 3 pixel text jog errors, double float margin errors, expanding box problems, guillotine bugs, disappearing backgrounds, etc. etc. etc. Almost all of these are exclusive to IE6. Fuck I hate IE6.

Microshaft needs to get out of the browser business. They have no idea what they are doing and it seems that they can't hire any smart people.

As for the coding drama:
Make sure that if you are using Dreamweaver or some other tool that you are setting up your site appropriately when developing. Make sure that your folders are set properly and are pointing to your images as they would on your server. When you are developing on your local machine, these auto HTML programs tend to point to the images locally on your computer. When I first started coding, I always had this same problem. It's all about the setup....Make sure your local setup mimics the file structure that exists on your server....

I was a loyal FF user til FF3, then shit started to get slow as fuck, often took 5 to 10 seconds just before I could type into the address bar on occasion and thats after I tweaked the hell out of it. So I use Safari 4 now for my normal browsing.
 
Sadly, people still don't know.

I just had a run in with a scientist who said "But people don't use Firefox! That is just a thing for computer freaks."

So I sent him a few stats, and he was just amazed.

Bad thing: I had to create some websites in colaboration with that guy. LOL
