Anyone bank with HSBC or M&T?

I am sick and tired of dealing with my local bank and I am considering opening a business checking account with someone bigger . The three biggest players in my area (in addition to my current bank) are Bank of America, M&T, and HSBC. I've had some bad experiences with Bank of America in the past, so I would like to avoid them.

Does anyone here bank with HSBC or M&T? How is their online banking system? How much do they charge for wire transfers (both incoming and outgoing) ? I am planning to stop by the HSBC branch later this week, but would be good to hear if anyone has firsthand experience with them.
 


I have an acct with M&T (personal, not business) and to be honest i fucking hate it. Closing that acct ASAP due to something that happened to me in Cancun.

Long story short...

I overdrafted (my fault), but they charged me a % on the money overdrafted, plus I didn't have the $$ in my savings to overdraft, so they charged me $35 on top of the charge + the %. So I ended up paying like $45 for a bottle of water, like 5 times instead of declining the charges.

That and they're a little shady on the charges.. I'm shifting all over to PNC I think... I'll PM you a writeup I did on high yield accts back a few months ago, it may help you.

Look into PNC Virtual Wallet for a smaller spend acct, like 2% interest on the savings and 1% on a mid-checking - 2% only lasts up to 25K though.

For business I'm also open to suggestions because I'm actually probably going to open one today, I was thinking like 1st Mariner Fed. Credit Union - they specialize in Entrepreneurs...

PS - M&T Web Banking sucks ass too. FrontPage-looking site from like '99, haha.

I have a few HSBC accounts. Useful for international stuff. never really had any issues with them.

Not sure how secure their online stuff is - they don't seem to have a physical box thingy like .. barclays for example.
 
Funny that you mention PNC, I was actually looking at getting a business account with them. I already have a savings account there and service has been good. The problem is that M&T has acquired PNC at the end of last year ( M&T Bank to buy Provident Bankshares in $401M stock deal - Pittsburgh Business Times: ) , so I figured that there is no point in opening a new account with them - it will get merged into M&T anyway .

I do all of my personal and business banking with HSBC. They have excellent accounts, low fees and personal service. I could not say enough good things about them.

For business their online accounts are very secure. You cant even access them without a key they give you that on demand generates a 6 digit number that you need to access your account.
 
Funny you mention HSBC, as this is where I will be handing in my letter of resignation today. My quitting thread here.

For business banking, HSBC is alright. They definitely are a business bank and not so much one for personal customers. If you do international business and require trade services, then HSBC's reach is unrivalled. There are offices in 64 countries, only Citi has about the same reach but their bank went all to shit over the past few months.

ah - sorry, missed the bit about him wanting a business account. I've only got hsbc personals.
 
I don't really like HSBC, their service charges on our personal account were just ridiculous. I'm not sure if that account is still open.

I have several Natwest offshore accounts (Bank of Scotland) with the chip and pin gizmo for sign/countersign numbers. Personal Sterling account and 2 multi currency accounts, one personal and one for business, in Sterling/Euros/US Dollars. With the number generator we can move money between accounts and send it anywhere we like from anywhere, all online. I step foot in the bank maybe once a month tops.

It rocks.
 
Everything had a charge on it for us and on top of that they were charging us like $13 a month just for having the account even if we didn't do any transactions with them. So in the end the account put itself into overdraft just sitting there.
