I've been thinking of getting rid of my motorola razr and getting an iphone. The price of the phone isn't a big concern but what I'm concerned about is whether it's worth paying $39.99 + $30 (data) for even the basic, 450 minute plan? With tax and various fees, you're probably looking at around 80 bucks a month for the basic plan.

Can't say anything bad about your price plans as we have different ones here in Switzerland. I pay about $40/month for the basic plan including 1GB data transfer. Adding the phone costs I am about $60+/month which is damn cheap compared to other price plans here...

For the iphone itself its a great tool to dive into mobile and internet. Nice with all the little apps you can get for free and also the paid ones are more than worth the money (using google analytics/google adsense and apps like that). I would wait some more days and go with the new iphone 3gs if you really consider to buy one. Go and play with it a bit you'll love it :D

also related, but probably a hijack, can you get the iphone at wal mart on launch day if I didn't pre-order?

Having just got a iPhone 3G last week, all I can say is it kicks ass.

However it really depends what you want it for. I love being connected to the net whether or not I'm at my main computer. I love all the different things I can do, and keep on top of.

The only thing that really grinds my gears is the fact that with the $30 unlimited data plan it doesn't include text messaging.

I'm not even in an area where I can get and take advantage of the 3G but data transfer still seems pretty good (way better than I expected). It also supports wifi so that's not as big of a deal.

I use to have a seperate iPod along side my phone but now I just roll it together in one device.

It's not exactly cheap, but if you want to be connect all the time it does it's job beautifully.

My phone plan is like $260/month after all the addons and data plans, etc... (family plan with three lines) but its still worth it. iPhone is the shit.

I pay $178 a month for the iPhone with unlimited minutes, text, data, etc, etc etc. All I can say is, IT'S BEEN THE BEST INVESTMENT I HAVE EVER MADE ON A PHONE. I would pay $300 a month if that was the price. Best phone on the market hands down.

couldn't you just download AIM and IM most of your contacts for free?

As a mobile device, it's great. App selection is cool and things like google maps with GPS is awesome. One big, big drawback though is you can only run 1 thing at once and if the phone rings (and you answer), it auto-quits the app you were running.

As a phone, it's ok. Maybe not even that great. A lot of the time it drops out for me and I haven't changed networks for 10 years and have never had that problem with any other phone as much as I've had with the iphone. I get the "I won't answer the phone call" at least once a day where you try to slide your finger on the touch screen to answer the call and it doesnt respond and I've missed quite a few calls because of that.

I've had mine around 9 months and the battery life sucks. I put it on the charger overnight last night and got the 20% battery warning at around 4pm. I didn't even use it that much today either.

Oh and iTunes sucks ass, hard.

However all in all, I'm pretty happy because I can use standard headphones so I don't need to carry my iRiver + phone on the train anymore, plus as a mobile/internet/email device it's very, very handy.

the iphone is unlimited data in the USA. on verizon, AIM messages count as a text, not data.

Duh! But what, everyone and there mom has an iPhone or what? My friends don't and they sure as hell aren't going to pay for a data plan, so that makes AIM worthless.

Does anyone else with iphone 3g have a problem with dropped calls or zero bars? I have two 3g iphones and problem with both of them with these two things

Not a fan of the iPhone at all, especially for business. I have tried many different phones and smartphones but prefer the blackberry above all else.

I have a blackberry which I'm stuck with, and my wife bought me an iphone for my bday, Iphones hands down are the best of the two. The only thing an iphone cannot do that a blackberry can is be used as a modem, and the new version ihpne can be.

I seriously don't know how I did w/o my iphone, its the best money I've spent in a long time. Besides the hookers and blow obv.

^^ I came from a blackberry too, and like it a lot more. I would have got a blackberry storm if it had decent reviews but seems like it's a hunk of shit.
