New community site - should I just ban all Indians etc?

It's bad practice and here's why. There are a finite number of smart people on the internet, and an even smaller number that want to join your community. The top 1% of users really determine the quality of the community. If you lose 1 one intelligent person ready to make a large contribution to your forum by banning Indian IPs you have hurt your forum immensely. Ban people on a case by case for terrible English/stupidity. Sure it takes a little more time, but it will be worth it.

I agree with you in principle, but for this community I need people who can write proper English more than I need highly intelligent people. And out of the 30 random users I checked today from India, not 1 wrote posts or comments in what I would consider to be acceptable English for a "professional" forum.

But what if number 31 is a freakin genius. The point is there are intelligent well spoken people that live in India. Excluding just one is a huge loss for your community. Take the extra time to screen people manually and it will pay off.

Eventually the goal is to have the community be self-moderating, but at the start I just can't have a bunch of rubbish content that will turn off the rest of the users.

I wonder what Amazon does. They must get 50,000 user submitted reviews a day. I highly doubt they have someone who reads and edits every single one. I have a feeling that any from an India IP go right to /dev/null.

I really can't speak on this morally, but as others have said it is your site and you can do with it as you please.

Instead of banning, why not just redirect users from certain countries to a nice formal landing page; explaining how you are a new site and are currently only available in select countries. A bit more professional than straight up banning, and would leave the door open to lifting the barrier on those countries in the future.

He stole that line from Jay Z...so I guess it makes it less racist.

For us, when we were 100% free and smaller, we needed to ban huge blocks of ips because it was simply too much to keep up with. You'd come into a chat rooms and it would be 98% members from very, very poor countries begging for money or trying to scam.

We've relaxed the bans as our model has changed and we have more features in place to combat this...

But for us... If we didn't do something... They would have killed our site.
I didn't even want to go on it for a period of time.

Anyone looking to date the daughter of a Prince from Nigeria who has $12M US Dollars since they killed her father? If you give her your bank account number, she will transfer it to your account and you can live happily ever after.
