So it turns Facebook demographic targeting people "In High School" is poorly named/total bullshit. Let's take a look at the numbers,

Total number of people "In High School"
34,000,000ish

People aged 14-19 that are "In High School"
8,000,000ish

So wait a second, this means there are 26,000,000 high school students that are above the age of 19, sounds strange but maybe they are all just retarded facebook ad approval people who stayed back a few grades. Let's dig a little deeper.

People aged 60-Any that are "In High School"
1,500,000ish

Unless senior citizen homes are now considered high schools there is no way there are 1.5 million people aged 60+ currently attending high school. This leads me to one of the following conclusions,

-By "In High School" they really mean "High School was the highest level of education I achieved"
-The demographic numbers are just fucked up
-Facebook ads has no clue what the fuck they are doing

This is well known but probably still good information for some people on here who actually haven't learned this yet.

I haven't been in college for the past 3 years and my profile still says I'm in college just because I've been too lazy to change it. It'll probably still say I'm in college when I'm 50 because I don't care enough to get around to it. I agree that some people use fake info, but I think situations like what I just explained are more likely to make up the bulk of the incorrect demo information.

You could just use this to your advantage! Run campaigns targeted at elderly men trying to meet young boys. There's possibly nothing that could go wrong.

i saw this and i just wanted to comment .... this is fucked up

but what facebook really needs is a "not" option. say you want to target ppl that have never gone to college, you can't.

you can only target
high school
in college
college grad

if they had a "not" option
you could target
high school
not college
not college grad

bam! instant 8,000,000 plus ppl u can reach

I just assume that almost everyone from 13-18 on Facebook is in high school, and if they aren't they're probably stupid enough to sign up for my offer anyways (unless it's a scholarship)

remember, a lot of people put the high school they attended without putting a graduation date. Facebook counts that as "In High School"

Facebook demographic stats are way off, all the time. Try putting in "men interested in women" in any country, and you will lose half the population! Clearly impossible, it is just that people do not fill out their profile completely. Also, many women put in "engaged" to stop random men from emailing them all the time.

Anyway, what I want to say is that you need a scattershot attempt when you go for a demographic. That means put in for example "male 18+ single" for the main ad, but put a secondary ad at "male 18-35" with a choked bid (bidding low, scavenging clicks). This method allows you to spread beyond the borders of your demographic without losing ctr. Of course, it depends on your target demographic.
