All stores are out of iphones so I got a dream today.
I like it.
Its quicker then the 3g (donno about 3gs)
Only real drawback is the multitouch zoom in browser and stuff, that is gold on iphone.
Anyone else have an android phone? Any recommended apps?

oh and, dullspace

Any guides on that? can I get access to a linux-like shell? (I dont know much about andriod but i assume its built on nix)

Rooting any G-fone is a must. Besides getting multi-touch zoom you get auto rotate like the iphone and a ton of other apps in the market.

For example, there is a killer app for the G-1 that is a Wi-Fi tether app which has bailed me out on several occasions when I needed web access.

If you follow those tutorials closely you can learn to backup and restore your phone build easily.

One huge plus is that all of your contacts are automatically backed up and sync with Gmail always no matter what happened to your phone or how drunk you are/were.

XDA Developers forum will have some killer power saving tweaks and roms for it. I have the Fuze and at first it was terrible then once I got rid of the original rom, the thing is faster than my iphone and has a lot more functionality. The dream looks slick! The Fuze is a pc first then phone but would be interested to know how you guys like the Android!

How is the battery life with the 3g running on?

Battery life is terrible, it doesnt bother me because I dont often leave my computer for large amounts of time.

Its <= my old iphone 3g

But in its defence, I am running a lot of apps in the background and havent optimized anything yet

Yeah when I had the G1 it died in about 8 hours. Very frustrating, they tell you to turn the 3g off. But why turn the 3g off when its a 3g phone? Love Android though, wish they would work on getting a longer battery life.

With tweaks and a custom ROM, I get ~2 days of use out of my G1 before she needs a charge (with 3G, Wifi, GPS constantly running, and using it as my primary MP3 player)

Android phones are really good. It's sad Google didn't support multi-touch from the start, it might make all of the g1's obsolete. But in about 3-5 years Androids will have a bigger market share than the iPhone (IMO).

App sales/growth for the g1 is pretty staggering.

I'm rooting my phone right now, hopefully I won't destroy the phone :D
