Remember that "let's have a poker tournament thread" from a few months back? Yeah, screw that.

I had a small "problem" between 2003-2005 where I paid my bills with online poker, but also went broke a few times. In the end, I ended up gambling with my savings to "pay my rent" and lost it all on a table with limits higher than I should have ever been playing.

Fast forward to last month when I decided to drop $1k into Full Tilt and lost it in a day... again, at tables way too high for the $1k I had. I said fuck it, I'm not playing again.... but I dropped another $1k in a few days later.

Over the past few weeks I built that $1k up to $33k... I should have cashed the fuck out. Because tonight I lost all $33k. I apparently can't learn to stay away from big tables.

Moral of the story? I don't have one. Fuck poker. I'm taking another 4-5 year break.

It happens.

You need to physically get up and walk away and get off the game when you're on a losing streak. You will find streaks are either good (when you cant lose), typical(some good shit, some bad shit - most of the time this is the norm), or just Loser City, USA population you, where you just lose non stop.

Set up a max budget to lose per session. When you hit it, you walk away, clear your head, do something else. You can come back in an hour or two and try a few hands again just to see if things have improved... but when you're losing to begin with and angry and emotional, going to the $100 tables is suicide.

Find yourself an emotional online partner if you're doing this late at night, someone who is up usually at the time and usually online, so you can have someone talk some sense into you - if there is a next time. And don't be so quick to say there won't be. You've had a taste of what its like to go from 2K to 33K from online poker.. after the smoke clears you'll most likely try again convincing yourself you will be robotic in your actions and not let emotions get the better hand... this is what addiction is all about.

What tables were you playing when you built $1k to $33k?

Were you actually trying to become a profitable poker player or are you just gambling for fun?

I'm not much of a gambler.

Strike that.

We're all gamblers by nature, I just realize that I'm terrified of that high/crash loss of control so I really don't gamble much.

Anyway on the few times that I have,it's blackjack. I put a starting amount in my left pocket and the winnings in my right. No matter what's in my right pocket by the end, when the money in my left is gone, I'm done.

You need to find a local mid to high game. I personally would not drop that kind of dough on an online poker site. Too many bots running around. Also its funny how the live game randomness is quite different from online. I cannot tell you how many hands I have seen where 3 people had very strong hands with one card to come. Fucking online rake is a bitch and it would not put it passed me if they tweak the program to build large pots.

Though I have not dropped that kind of dough in online poker I have certainly had the same experiences. Put me in a live game and I have beaten up my local group many of times. We have about a 40 to 70 turnout each night. Different folks all the time with some regulars. Its almost like a little Vegas.

It's not too hard to outsmart a bot.. lol.

Also an explanation for the variation you see in online poker is just that you get through so many more hands per hour (esp if multitabling) that you are bound to see unlikely events happening more often.

That sucks. There's a whole lot of psychology at play. For me its best to know how much i am willing to loose when i step up to the table. I also try to know ahead of time when i will walk with the winnings. There have been many time i've gone to the table and lost my limit within 20min or so. I just quit.

Thats why i never play poker at a real table with friends. I tell em straight up that im walking if i win. Especially if i double my money in the first few 30 min or so. I think its more of a courtesy thing to stay and keep playing.

Blackjack is my game. I go strictly by the book, so theres no emotional guessing and i can walk anytime. It also helps to keep track of past game winnings and losses so you can get a clear picture on if you got a problem and need to quit.

Surely you'd rather play poker where (if you know how to play) you will make a guaranteed profit over time?

Dude i really think Full Tilt is rigged or something. I may put in $1000, win $5000 and then on the next hand get beat by a better full house or 4 of a kind and lose it all. Anyone know what i am saying?

No, FT is not rigged. I could go into detail about why it is clearly not rigged but it should be obvious if you just think about it logically.
