I would like to work with a leather product manufacturer in India, but the shipping would KILL my (theoretical) profits, especially with the initially small batch orders. Shipping the company a sample cost me $24, and shipping one unit back with FedEx or UPS is looking to be around $40!

How have you guys handled the high costs of shipping from overseas to the USA?

Cross your eyes until the 2 images meet. It turns 3D.

Hmmm...

yeah,, but after the high cost of shipping...

I never really do anything internationally..

btw, your pics don't work.

explain to me how?

I do a lot of shipping FROM South Africa TO America (rocks! ... as in heavy as rocks!) so I had to spend a lot of time researching this or I wouldn't get any customers ever.

By far the cheapest way to import is to NOT use FedEx or DHL. Get them to use a smaller indipendant shipping agent and ship to you nearest airport - not to your door.

You will need to collect at the airport and do your own customes and clearing which is a bit of a pain, but shipping this way is generally 20% - 25% of what FedEx charge so you can save a bundle.

If the value of the shipment is over $2000 you will need to use a clearing agent which can bump your costs, so chat to your supplier - they may be willing to send an undervalued invoice along with the order to help you through customs.

You could buy your own shipping vessel....

But seriously, what do you mean "shipping the company a sample costs you $24" What are you doing that requires you to send the company a "sample" constantly. You talking about sending a sample to the manufacturer?

Is it some kinda custom leather thing set to the customer's specs?

This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, thanks!

This was the initial sample of a textile product that will be made in leather to my specs. They just needed something to go off for the design changes, general feel of the product, etc... Buying a shipping vessel is out of the question, unfortunately.

As far as the boobs go, it's simple. I got it the first try, but I guess sometimes people have trouble.
Cross your eyes, and slowly uncross them until the left and right images align as one image in the center. You should see the nice ladies in 3D.

Dude your pics are way to big, how do expect anyone to cross their eyes to get that. And yeah I have dealt with plenty of shipping from foreign countries, I used to be a gold level powerseller on ebay last year when I was 19, I bought electronics from China all the time. So I know all about shipping prices and customs inspections and the whole 9 yards.

^ Care to let me in on any secrets?

And the pics are fine. I can see the 3D, no problem - if you can't it's not my fault. That's why I posted a third, 2D pic.

sure, what do you want to know exactly?

For starters, what kind of shipping rates are reasonable to expect for a small light item from India? Think about the size and weight of a paperback book. A single unit could easily be put into sturdy a padded envelope.

Second, I've never even been to India - How did you go about finding a cheap, reliable courier to use?

Lastly, what kind of harassment did you have to go through with customs, or do you get it all shipped to a fulfillment house?

For perspective, I'm brand new to this game of internet marketing, product creation, etc... I saw a niche I was familiar with being underexploited and thought I could work my way in. Simple things to people that have had a business for more than 2 months are not so simple to me, so I appreciate any kind of help I can get.

well with shipping rates just go to usps.com and it will give you rates from every country. No matter what your package will be inspected by us customs. Make sure you have your supplier fill out the customs form very accurately so customs doesnt get very suspicious and open up your package. If you want to find suppliers alibaba.com is your place. I lost a lot of money before I finally found out about that place. Also, I suggest you ship with EMS (USPS) their customs inspection is alot a lot less strict then UPS or DHL and such. Plus the shipping is usually the cheapest. If you get really big in the game, you will get a customs brokerage agent. And what they have connections with customs officers to get your packages through customs quickly. Im sure that will help. Good luck in your business man, it's a very tough business.

I'll back what Making Money is saying. EMS is the best shipping method for east Asia, especially for China. Their rates are like 25% of DHL, UPS and FEDEX and the shipping time is the same 5-7 business days, some times faster.

As for alibaba, it's a very good source of very cheap merchandise, but every time when you buy from a new seller ask for a sample first. There are a lot of scammers and a lot of the merchandise is very low quality. Plus never buy branded products from alibaba, 99% chance it will be just a fake.

For me I had a lot of success with ecigs bought from alibaba.

Hey man, your absolutely correct, but I kind of figured he would just buy a sample at first. But yes he is right, definitely buy a sample piece first. I dont know how much because I dont know what your selling, but try and get close to your sales rep. But there are shistey sellers out there definitely. And thanks green leaves
