Any Fans of The Dear Hunter?

Just wondering if there's any music fans out here that really dig the kind of "underground" scene. There's some great music out there that isn't heard at all.

For anybody that hasn't heard of them, they're a band who releases CDs as Acts (Acts I-III so far) that have story line's. The song writing is fucking fantastic as well as the production.

I got to see them live a couple weeks ago and they were great. Here's a stream of one of their songs (make sure to listen to it all to get the real Dear Hunter effect) :

LOL, I know. It was the only thing that came to mind. Bad band name imo.

After listening to the song you posted in your second post, they sound like a band that would be better live.

Not my thing really, will listen to a few more.
 
Check out Red Hands on their Myspace, probably their most popular song.

They do an amazing job live. It's also music that's meant to be listened to all at once, in a row (at least one time). The songs all flow and tie together with the storyline.

Their lead singer and songwriter made the first act all by himself, just help from his brother on drums and back up vocals from his mom. Pretty impressive.

I've listened to a few more on myspace, it's just not my thing, they sound very amateur. It could be bad recording equipment or just my very poor recognition of talent, probably the latter.
 
Never before have I seen a more perfect mixture of new school Avenged Sevenfold and old school Panic At The Disco with the vocal styles of Coheed and Cambria and Queen.

I hate it. But I respect the musical abilities of these guys. Props.
 
Yeah, these guys are very good musicians, but their music lacks the kind of passion and depth that, say The Mars Volta have (I'm only picking a recognizable power prog group). But it is just a matter of taste--I generally don't love music like this unless it has a more self-aware sense of humor. A bit pretentious to call an epic album "Life and Death" when it only really skims a musical surface.
 
One note--a lot of music on MySpace will sound more amteur-ish than it is because of the compression on the audio player sound files. These guys have done a pretty good job with the production here.
 
I’m hearing the Queen in the first verses. Listen to Death on Two Legs and get back to me.

Apocalyptica shows up to play strings for the entire number.

Then Jeff Buckley comes back from the dead for the sensitive middle section. After that bit Dear Hunter starts to sound a lot like Muse.

Overall I’d say it’s better than 99% of indie rock records being released.
 
This track is growing on me.

Does anyone else find the drumming bland? I like the intensity but it’s at the cost of good dynamics. The drums sound overbearing and ridiculous in the intro, like something Lars Ulrich would do.
 
I found the drumming kind of underwhelming as well. I'm a drummer myself, and I respect that this guy does better than almost all of the world of metal (nonstop bass-drum roll with occasional cymbal and snare, but he still kinda fucking does it), but it still lacks feeling.

I may get chastised for this, but if you want to hear some solid, amazing drumming from well-known bands, check out these guys, with good example songs:

Shannon Leto (30 Seconds To Mars) "Kings and Queens", "Oblivion"

Pretty sick band. Also love that they are on tour with Thrice, one of the best bands of all time IMO.

Yeah I would say they're not amateur at all. They're great musicians live, the guitarist is pretty damn fast, the live vocals are amazing, and they do a great job of bringing the high quality production of the CD to the stage. They did a sick a capella song that sounded just like the CD.

I feel like you need to be on cocaine to keep up with TMV. They're outstanding musicians though.

I feel like Casey does a great job of singing and playing with passion, Black Sandy Beaches is an amazing song of vocal passion. I also really do like the band more because of the whole one-man show, he's like the composer of it all.

Also I agree that the drumming could use some more dynamic. He's good at doing the same thing over and over (he's actually the lead singer/composers brother).
