You guys would be surprised by the most basic ads. Even the ones that look like handwriting and "I tried this ONE weird trick" in a shitty font... Just gives it that non-pro and intimate feel, I have been watching Marcus' ads for many years actually - he's got some of the crappiest looking but most effective creatives out there. Fuck the title 'pro media buyer' - the guy has never been much for graphics or wow factor for his creatives or his site, yet makes an absolute killing. Marcus if you read this mate - I had a site called websocials back in 02 similar to pof - we used to actually laugh at your site because of how basic the shit looked/was, now years later I'm both super proud and super pissed at how naive I was to 'over the top' creative vs. good outreach and marketing with non-intrusive creative.

Split test your super glossy ads w/stock, with some of these simple text on white BG with non-intrusive looking basic noobtard messaging ads, most surfers are still naive to the marketing angle and I think we tend to way over-complicate our process sometimes.

blow him and get it over with.

Gotta give props where props are due. Markus is one of most successful and most profitable "one man operations" in the history of the Internet. He has some help now but he built POF by himself and it was already a 9 figure business when he hired people.

I always wondered how he got the site going though. I assume most/all dating sites just populate the site with 10s of 1000s of fake profiles when they first launch, and then slowly remove the fake profiles as they get real users?? (I don't do shit in dating)

Basic ads work - but this one probably doesn't.

Of course not knowing where the ad is placed it's hard to say but chances are people who haven't signed up for plentyoffish yet haven't heard of it. Meaning they won't give a shit when they see that ad because they won't understand it.

Personally I think something like this, on the same basic background, would work better:

"Did you know 58% of "users" on other dating sites are actually fake?

Fact: Plentyofish has hundreds of thousands of active users in your area just waiting to meet you.

Sign Up Now."

But the dude is raking in the monies so he must be doing something right. :)

Actually I am pretty sure he is using retargetting and the ad is only shown to people who visit POF but haven't signed up.

I've only started seeing it after I started advertising wit POF - never seen it before.

When INC magazine sticks any of you skeptics on their cover please let me know and I'll value your "1 rule to a flat stomach (OBEY)" rip offs a lot more.

dude the guys a boss.. his name is so big he doesnt even need to mention its a DATING SITE ad.. wow GFG :D

Rofl making fun of a guy who's worth probably $100 million. Get back to work.

Markus is a straight baller, 'nuff said. When he ran the "Advertise on POF" banners on WF recently, he posted about the response he's getting - something about the fact that being a brander opens up a whole new array of metrics (aside from the limited AM perspective of imps, clicks, and CTR).

Very cool stuff to be sure
