I rent a condo and I'm currently in a lease that ends at the end of April... However, I got home a few minutes ago and found a letter on my door saying the building has been sold and the only information they gave about the new owner was, "can be contacted at ****@hotmail.com" (fucking hotmail?).

Anyway, I don't know jack when it comes to tenant laws in the state of Missouri... but does anyone know if the lease I signed with the previous owner is still legally binding? This sounds like the perfect opportunity to get out of this shithole.

And yes, I did call my lawyer and I left a message, but that bastard takes days to respond to me.

Thanks guys... I was actually called back by my lawyer a few minutes after I posted this (which blew me away).

Yeah, the lease transfers to the new owner. Oh well... didn't hurt to dream.

Tenant laws vary a lot not only by state but down to the city level. But in most cases the lease agreement remains valid unless you sign a new contract with the new landlord.

Unless a clause is written into your lease agreement that addresses the sale of the building, you'll be staying till April.

Edit: I see you found your answer. I got a phone call in the middle of answering the post.

Yeah I guess so.. The would probably have to give you a 2 month notice. The contract must have all those not sure ... I am also in KC and I am now serving a notice ( Opposite of yours) coz I had to break it to move to Boston.. And the contract was binding both ways...i guesss?

Whatever happend to them switching appliances on you (if I remember right)

Oh hell... that was just the beginning and I should have got out while I could. They never put the appliances back... but that's nothing compared the the crap I've been through over the past nine months. This place is a piece of shit.

The electric wiring is totally screwed and probably a fire hazard (lights will come on, but not go off for hours after flipping the switch, if at all), I've requested maintenance probably ten times and they've been here once. They stopped paying a trash company to empty the dumpster for about a month and trash was EVERYWHERE. The air/heating ducts aren't connected properly, so my bedroom is always the same temperature as whatever it is outside. The owner won't allow anyone but the cable company to run wires, so I'm stuck with shitty internet service. I could go on and on...

Can't wait to get the hell out of here.

It sounds like you may have the basis for a rent strike. Maybe you could weasel out of that lease because of code violations.

Actually I think you can legally get out of your lease based on those things alone. You have to give a landlord time to remedy situations but if they don't fix it you can legally break the lease.

Lights = Safety problem
Trash = Health problem

I got out of my lease because the other tenants weren't cleaning up their dog shit, so the grass in front of my unit was filled with so much dog shit you could hardly see the grass. I had my lawyer send a letter basically stating they had 7 business days to clean it up or I was filing a judgment to have the contract broken, after 5 days passed they called me up and said they were ripping up the lease agreement and asked me not to file in court. Renting sucks, buy a place.

To everyone saying, "renting sucks, buy something"... helllls no. I've been on this Earth over 30 years and the longest I've ever lived in one place is about 2 years. Since 1998 I haven't been able to stay in one place longer than a year. I try for six month leases if possible. I just can't stand seeing the same walls, bathroom, entire land area... for that long.

If I bought a place, I'd want to sell it a year later and then I'd be fucked.

Sounds like LL is breaching contract on his side to me with all the shoddy stuff - I'd look at that.

Also, I disagree about renting sucking too - I've always rented. If you have shitty landlord it sucks, but if you find a good landlord it's great. I've lived in a really nice house with a cool landlord for the last 4 years. With the fall in property prices, if I'd bought instead of rented, we'd have lost a fortune.
