DIY Biz School: What Would You Do?

I've already cornered the market you're talking about.
I already control what you seek; you cannot build it.
I am the future. I am success. You will never live to know me.
I have a software that does all that.
You should post this in the WF T-shirt thread :banana_sml:

@justo_tx:
Yes a programmer will change the game, but what are the odds of you being that programmer?

I think for long term success ecommerce or building a legit product is the way to go. Hopefully someone with experience can post more.

A lot better than a non programmer changing the game :D But I get what you are saying, any industry is going to have outliers that can redefine or reshape their industry and the chances of being one of them is extremely slim. But you don't have to be a game changer to make programming a worthwhile skill if you plan on being part of the IM industry for the next decade. How many thousands of affiliates are constrained by Wordpress as a platform just because they don't know how to work with anything else (and consequently doing the exact same thing as those thousands of other affiliates)? While their are reasons other than ease of use to use WP there will be cases where WP or a plugin just ins't the answer, if you know how to sling code realizing that answer is going to be a lot easier.

I want to continue doing IM so I spend most of my time studying programming. That and I would like to have an employable skill if all of my campaigns go to shit at once and I get things back together.

Something else that would be pretty useful would be statistics. If you can squeeze an extra percent or two out of a campaign it can mean a lot of extra money in the long run.

Currrent problems will predict future trends. Find the future trends that will make money and build websites that provide valuable content to go along with these trends before anyone else does. Build websites that help people and that do not decieve them.

Build huge content websites and forums that act like investment properties on the internet to promote Google Adsense. You will never have to worry about ads, chasing down advertisers and you will work with a company that is not going anywhere. Plus the checks are always good with the big G.

In 1-2 years you could be set and not have to worry about AM, offers, FTC's etc.

This is what I'm talking about. Adsense? $40 re-bill payouts?

I'm talking about Diorex and Aojon status. What about Dov Charney, Phil Knight, Mark Cuban. What did these guys understand that let them time the markets so well?

Fuck Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki and all those other assholes. They're just e-book gurus on another level. They're one dimensional.

Apply leverage to what? Leverage works both ways and should be handled with a lot of care.

Start with a plan to generate cash flow and assets, then look at the best vehicles to run with.

I've gone e-commerce for cashflow and as for assets, i aint investing heavily in shit until these markets figure out what the fuck they are doing. Currencies can move as much as 5% in a day now and hardly get news coverage.

You got me there :)

If its something on the internet, you don't want to be a middleman longterm. Control the audience or the product. So adsense is a possibility because you can always sell your traffic elsewhere. As for long term stability of rebills who knows... I wouldn't want them to be my only source of income at any point of the food chain(affiliate, network or advertiser)

For my e-commerce biz, my biggest competitors started 10 years ago and are now well over 100m a year in revenue, and have gone public etc. So I guess it pays to stick with something solid. Makes it easier to travel at least without always hustling and watching stats.

If you want to 10 year out, big money, Mark Cuban style exits you better start building a product or company with some barriers to entry (allow Warren Buffett to drop some knowledge.)

There are no barriers to entry in IM, not to affiliates that only need a few bucks and few domains to start arbitraging, not to the networks that can stiff affs if they get sideways with the advertisers, and not to advertisers that can put any snake oil bullshit product on a lander and rebill until they have fold the first shell company and start again.

Dov Charney and Phil Knight have production and logistical barriers to entry to their industry. At the time of broadcast.com Mark Cuban there were cost of infrastructure barriers to entry and first mover advantage.

Knowledge has been dropped!

@Thuxen, I've noticed that issue with many verticals in the e-commerce biz. Better late than never tho, amirite?

@justo_tx, I think you've hit it exactly on the head. Production and logistical barriers to entry look like the #1 advantage that all of the titans have on their side. I see you live in Dallas, too. It blows my mind how many SMU grads go straight from the Cox school into supply chain management, etc. The LEAST creative types are the backbones for these companies. It's the guys willing to do the slow-burn type jobs that keep the machine turning.

Lots of good stuff in this thread : )

Yeah, lots of logistical people around Dallas due to D/FW and Alliance airports, and more are going to be coming once the Inland Port in South Dallas comes online.

We need to setup a meetup for people in Dallas area that want to shoot the shit about IM and get a few beers.

Work hard, work a lot, and the pieces will fall into place.

Currently I'm trying to implement the 4 hour work week, so I can work more weeks in one week than you could ever imagine.

I'm in fo sho
