this has happened to me twice. I keep getting an error when I go to my site that says

Parse error: syntax error unexpected '<' in /home/content/p/a/l/siteusername/htm/wp-includes/default-filters.php on line 229

does anyone know what this is?

thanks

Install any new plugins recently/upgrade one?

If not, just copy over the existing install (backup first) with the SAME version number's files.

I actually had a problem where a virus was changing stuff on my Wordpress installs, adding backlinks etc. Guessing it was an exploit from FTP, so changed passwords, switched to SFTP and had no issues.

Long story short, if they hadn't screwed up the code and made it start throwing errors, I probably would have never found it.

Try talking to your host and ask what the login details are using SFTP. Most hosts default usually is port 22, with the same login details...but that can vary by provider. They may need to enable or may not even have it available. After you do that, you can use a free client like WinSCP to connect (don't store passwords though). You can download that here: WinSCP :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows
