Dorky things you love

That is definitely the dorkiest thing I can possibly think of at the moment. You win!

High school band is competitive in a lot of states. Look at Texas as one of the prime examples. There are region/area competitions along with state championships. South Carolina, FL, Indiana, and several others do this too. There's also a national circuit, BOA (bands of america) which has regionals, super regionals (Atlanta, San Antonio and a few others), and Grand Nationals held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis every November. Japan has a highly competitive circuit as well, JMBA. The USA has the "major leagues" of marching each summer, DCI. Brass/percussion/guard only.

One of the lead performers in Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere" is actually one of the most famous marching band composers in the world, and pushed the art further. Writing for 200+ members, including brass, woodwinds, mallet percussion, 3+ synthesizers, drumline percussion and auxiliary percussion is difficult, but can give some amazing results.

Crowds at DCI competitions can get up to around 40,000-50,000 people (half of the stadium is closed off for acoustical reasons). Up to 50,000 people...just there to watch the band (drum corps) perform. No football game.

Excuse me while I nerd out:

The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, from Rosemont IL. 99.150 out of 100, and a perfect example of the musical + athletic aspect, and how difficult it really is to do this.

2nd place overall nationwide, a high school from San Antonio TX; widely considered to be one of the single best shows of all time (music wise, concept wise, visual wise)

And Japan. All competitions in Japan are held indoors, and their season is from Aug-Dec. Some bands are school sponsored, some church, some just community. This wasn't even the winning show of their competition, but it was my favorite:

Nanotechnology (Some very promising cool shit)
Time travel ("if I could just go back to 1982" -Uncle Rico)
Crime novels/shows (Sometimes I wish I were a detective)
War/military history books/shows (I was in the Army and like all that stuff)

Even Steven fuckin ruled........

Two weeks ago the Even Steven's movie was on. Where they go to an island and it's all a reality TV show. I was flipping to watch the news I believe and once I happened on that I couldn't take my hand of the remote...

Not really nerdy dorky, but I still every now and then throw a football from room to room using the couch as my catcher (don't act like it doesn't sound fun).

Diners. Love hitting up the old diners when I'm on the road. I'll walk in and grab the neighborhood rag/pennysaver and then make a beeline for the counter and take one of the middle stools. Order me up one of the specials (or waffles and sausage by default) and a black coffee in one of those heavy bone colored ceramic mugs. For the next half hour or so I'll immerse myself into the local culture - eavesdrop on the various conversations or engage in one myself, check out the community happenings in the paper. Some of the really good ones have a display case with their own baked goods so I'll grab something out of that, a toothpick and a couple of mints and be on my way.

That's not dorky at all. Sounds awesome!

I watch History and Discovery channels religiously, especially the shows American Pickers and Pawn Stars. So cool learning the history of things they buy. Kind of makes me want to own some cooler stuff.

We went to State every year I was in high school - I was in charge of the Pit (or the percussion section that sits in the front of the band.) I played tympani.

Everything I do is dorky - right down to my (very) extensive collection of juvenile literature and my DVR full of Holmes on Homes and House Crashers.

Both shows are great and I watch them both because I like seeing the unique items, too.

However, those American Pickers guys are fucking douches when it comes to personality. They try so hard to be funny, but they aren't at all. I do give them respect for not trying to rip everyone off though. I've seen a couple episodes where the owner said they could have an item for $5 and they turn around and say that it's worth more than that and end up giving the owner $20 or $30 for the item.

Pawn Stars is cool just because of the randomness of items that come through their doors. On an older episode some dude came in to sell an ejector seat from a fighter plane. After further examination the actual propellant (or however it works) that is used to eject the seat was still live and had he ever pulled the cord he could have found himself shooting through his roof.

I can't help it, I love this movie:

I love video games, Coast to Coast AM and psychics. I played D&D, though I haven't in many many years, but just yesterday I was on the phone, laughing with an old friend of mine about the stupid shit we used to do when we played. I kinda want to play some old school AD&D now...

Yea, I'm a nerd, and most the things I enjoy are nerdy.

I'm an otaku- Otaku (おたく/オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, and video games.

The japanese version is very negative, almost equating to sociopathic shut-in.
I once met the american guy who handles international relations for Studio Ghibli. He was amusing. But aparently you can't be an Otaku if you've ever enjoyed a sport. Ever. I hear they take this very seriously in Japan.
But then he also thought bordeline yaoi, gender bending anime was bizarre beyond belief. Coming from a guy who's proof checked pictures of midgets made out of boobs.

coding. I really can't help it. I know most people think i'm crazy for liking it but whenever I finish a large, impressive project i get an erection.

Lol. I thought I was the only one with a damn near code fetish.
