anyone love austin, tx?

Oh come on the fifth ward in Houston is a very walkable and safe place ;)

I don't know if she was talking about safety/urban planning so much as that blasted hell orb in the sky bombarding us with concentrated heat rays 8 months out of the year. You can boil an egg quicker by tossing it in your pool in august instead of waiting for water to boil.

Fuck I haven't been to Franks yet gotta try that shit. Need myself some chocolate chip bacon cookies.

Yep it is brutal, with the humidity at 100%.. I dont miss summers here, my a/c has a hard time keeping up..

Check out the Oasis on Lake Travis. Bit out of the way, but the drive out will introduce you to the beginnings of beautiful Texas hill country. The restaurant itself is a multi-story wooden porch built into a cliff over the lake, excellent views, outside seating - try to go at sunset.

The food is good but nothing too special, but it's not really the reason people go to the place - it's more known for the view and atmosphere.

thanks for all the suggestions. i think austin is going to be fun to visit..... just wish it was more pedestrian friendly throughout the city and not just downtown areas... ah well, cant win them all.

i def want to check out the lake travis area too... hoping to get a feel for as much of the city as possible during my short stay (considering relocating if i like it)

I love Austin I live 45 minutes from there.

Try going to eat at Estância Churrascaria it's a really good Brazilian steakhouse and ask for Guarana to drink unless you want something alcoholic.

Actually I moved from sanjose,ca to austin 2 years back. Austin is really coolest and nicest city. I am liking so far. Lot of restaurants and lots of music events around the city. Big cities Dallas and houston is just 3 hours away. San Antonio is just 70 mins drive.Very nice apartments and cheaper homes if you want to buy.

I suggest you get a place in Downtown or South Congress, go on vacation or stay with a friend the 10-14 days surrounding SXSW, and rent your place out for a few hundred bucks a night. You'd probably cover 2-4 months rent as long as you don't have too much breakable stuff laying around.

Just for giggles next year, take a look at the Temp Housing section of Austin Craigslist around the last couple weeks of February. It's a shit storm.

yep. took me 1 hour to get home from an interview when it should have taken me 10 minutes.

I also HATE parking in austin. then again it's probably like this in every city.

College towns specifically. Go to Tallahassee FL one day and you'll want to kill yourself. I spent an hour circling around at times finding a spot just to get to class.

im trying to hit up the salt lick restaurant on saturday, so far there's one other wf member who's planning to meetup, if interested, holla!

btw, im planning to propose to my gf while there, i was thinking of hiking up mount bonnell and do it there.. what do you guys think of that idea? thinking of something unique to do isnt easy :/

any of you been to austin?

it looks really nice from all the stuff I've read, except that it doesn't seem to be a very walkable city (which is what I'd like).

got any recommendations for things to do/places to eat? I'll be there with april 29-may 4.

If you can, hire a convertible ... distances are too far to walk but if you have a nice ride ... you'll definitely enjoy your stay ;)

did a lot of walking my first day, and i def understand why this isn't a walking city. There are very few clusters of bussinesses/restaurants from what I saw. Most things are really spread out. today, we're going to a street festival and taking a free bus tour. houses are pretty cool and some areas remind me of west side ann arbor. however, there hasn't been a neighborhood that sticks out for me yet, since i haven't found any having location advantages over the others. btw, I proposed at zilker gardens and she said yes :)
