Least one cleanup worker drowned in crude oil... thats gota be a hell of a way to go.

Its close to time to stop thinking about the world in terms of nations. China, the U.S., who cares. If you have Internet (or ocean) access, its all fair game.

kblessinggr yeah that image is crazy. I couldn't imagine.

Refrozen, it would be nice but with so many different views it's hard. I mean how many people in China do you think even know about the spill. And I guarantee you that if you live in China you don't get a fraction of the internet information everyone else gets.

It wasn't until earlier this year that you could even search for information on AIDs there. (information bout STD in general was even blocked on the internet).

Yeah, China's a really sad state of affairs still. The market (probably?) wins in the end, but they're doing a damn good job suppressing the Internet from the majority, still.

I have a Chinese friend here, moved here two years ago, I ask him about public perception in China of things all the time, and one of the things that came up with Tiananmen Square.

He says to me, "I know the story now... but I didn't when I was in China. I don't think many there knows about it. The government is very protective of their wrongdoings in China."

Anyway, back on topic, there's a ton of natural oil seeps (in the Gulf of Mexico too) every year that are much larger than most people realize. The ecosystem deals with oil fairly elegantly (spreads light crude thin, which you can see on satellites, then hurricanes/organisms eliminate it safely, dark stuff falls to the bottom and does the same sort of system).

While its clear these spills are terrible, its not clear (to me, at least) what kind of unnatural effect they really have.

China Central Television earlier reported an estimate of 1,500 tons of oil has spilled. That would amount roughly to 400,000 gallons (1,500,000 liters) — as compared with 94 million to 184 million gallons in the BP oil spill off the U.S. coast.
