Sorry about the title, I was just doing my bizarro-Popeye impression.

The end of net neutrality... hope those berry websites are bankin' now that ISP and hosting prices are going to go up and up and up...

Why do you guys hate government net neutrality regulation? I'm sure it's a conspiracy theory of some sort... Democrats will outlaw Sarah Palin's Moose blog or something? Remind me again?

Heavy regulating the Internet from THIS administration or ANY administration is bad news. When is the last time the government regulated something and got it right? We give the government an inch and they take a mile. What does the government know about the Internet?(besides Gore..he invented it)

Your title is fucked as well. The Republicans are not responsible for SHIT...nothing that has went on in the last two years. They are the minority. They have no power. The Democrats have the super majority and could pass ANYTHING if they wanted too. Go blame the democratic lawmakers that are dangling off the dicks of special interest.

P.S. blame your bill going down on Google. They are the ones in bed with this administration. They are the ones that pushed for the bill to die in the end.

Stop contributing to the DERRRP RED VS BLUE faction war.

IF ONLY THOSE DARN {REPUBLICANS|DEMOCRATS} WEREN'T MEDDLING WITH AMERICA, AMERICA WOULD BE BETTER THAN ATLANTIS. Ad nauseam.

Read a book.

Okay, it's true, the government poorly regulated offshore oil drilling and that didn't work out so awesome. But can you honestly say that the takeaway from that situation is less regulation? Let the oil companies do whatever the fuck they waynt? It seems like someone needs to go the MMS and start kicking some asses. Let me give you some examples of government regulation that worked well for me so far today:

- I woke up and brushed my teeth, but the tap water didn't give me a bacterial infection.
- I took an Aleve for a raging hangover and I didn't die
- I got in my car and all the cars around me had similar bumper heights.
- I had bacon for breakfast from a restaurant that was cooked to a specific temperature and spared me from getting trichinosis
- I got into the office and turned the computer on. No lead paint on the walls, so avoided some cancer
- I turned on my computer and it didn't electrocute me

You get the idea. And anyways, fuck your al gore shit, it's a misquote. Al gore didn't say that, and didn't mean that. Ignorance isn't a badge of pride:

Heh. You're cute when you're angry. As you know, Republicans are obstructing their way to 2010. Senate only has 59 democrats, so now nothing can pass.

P.S. blame your bill going down on Google. They are the ones in bed with this administration. They are the ones that pushed for the bill to die in the end.

What does that mean? Because people at google give more money to democrats? You mean smart, young, educated people from many different backgrounds who live in California, many of whom are probably gay or immigrants aren't voting straight ticket Republican? Do tell!

I'm all for efficient management and all, but what's all this blanket government bashing?

Would you privatize police or the fire department? Heck, would you even be willing to completely deregulate the economy? With the public/private dichotomy, the private sector cares about only one thing: profit. Which is great when profit doesn't impede individual and collective well-being, but unfortunately everything in life doesn't revolve around profit. Could you imagine the army being a for-profit enterprise?

I know it's fashionable to hate the government and blame them for everything. But without them you wouldn't be where you are today.

Let's be rational here.

Net Neutrality

This shouldn't be a red v. blue issue, but an issue of monopolization.

I think the OP mentioned the conservatives because many, like one who posted in this thread seem to be willfully ignorant of what large corporations would do if given completely free reign. I think it's safe to assume that most of us would do the same thing if given the chance, but that doesn't means it's for the betterment of the nation.

This reminds me of the gilded age and the formation of Standard Oil.

In a free market everyone doesn't compete while the consumer plays patty-cake. Every company colludes and merges until they can dominate and charge whatever the hell they want at whatever standards they want.

Hey Popeye
Standard Oil was broken up and became:

Exxon
Mobil
Chevron
Amoco
Conoco
Marathon
Unilever
Pennzoil

and over hundred other companies.

If Standard Oil was still intact how much do you think gas would cost us?

Exactly how would it benefit business to do any of the above things? They have a bigger incentive to prevent such things from happening than the government does.

I don't think you understand how the free market work.

LOL, just like cigarettes and processed food companies right?

The government exists purely for the electorate to protect its citizens, while corporations exist purely to profit by any means necessary.

I think this two party system is just a tug-of-war between two diametrically positioned lunatics. A truly free market is as crazy as total government regulation.

Objectivism doesn't work in the real world.

Oh snap, you just turned this into a 10 page thread where republicans + libertarians team up on democrats for 5 pages and then libertarians turn on republicans for the last 5.

Bloomberg reports something else:

Google, Verizon Said to Strike Deal on Web Traffic Rules - Bloomberg

From the Bloomberg story:
The compromise as described would restrict Verizon from selectively slowing Internet content that travels over its wires, but wouldn’t apply such limits to Internet use on mobile phones, according to the people, who spoke yesterday and asked not to be identified before an announcement.

So which news source got it right? Wait and see I guess

How come net neutrality advocates are so tragically unaware of how corporation-controlled the FCC is?

If the most resounding talking point in support of Net Neutrality is that corporations shouldn't be controlling internet access, then why is bottlenecking internet decision-making at the hands of a corporative decision-making body like the FCC such a brilliant idea?

Must be an easy life ignoring what's actually going on in the world.

why don't these fuckers just leave everything the way it is? last time i checked the internet was running pretty well. greedy bastards.
