If stranger was a child, the child.
If stranger was some random adult, MY dog.
If not MY dog, the stranger.

Sometimes when I want to torture myself I'll think of the news story a few years back about the woman who was drowning and had to decide which of her 2 kids to save, and put myself in that situation.

It ultimately comes down to the fact the MIND will want to save the stranger, and the dog, at the same time, but the body does only what it can do.

The scenario works better if a thief/villain has a gun to your head and simply says "Choose. Your dog, or the stranger." Now you're left only with the moral decision.

I think inherently we all like strangers and want to be liked, but the human race is just as ready to stone someone to death. Ever experience sudden road rage over a total stranger, just for something stupid like cutting in front of you on the highway? And all you can think and feel about this person is pure hatred?

The family unit will always choose itself over non family (instinct perhaps), those who chose THEIR dog (not A dog) have my support, and I'd do the same.

It's amazing to me that you think someone who chooses to save the animal they are with each and everyday over another animal that they know nothing of and have never seen before are "assholes/douchebags".

You spend each and everyday with this animal, you bond with it, it becomes part of your family. And at the drop of a dime you think people are supposed to just let their dog die for some stranger?

If it's part of your family then it's part of your family. A bond like that isn't broken at the drop of a dime just because some random human fell into the water.

This is exactly my thinking. I love my dogs and if I saw my dog and a stranger drowning I'd get my dog. I love my dog, I care for my dog, it makes me happy and it's part of my family. A stranger means fuck all to me.

If I saved the human I'd get nothing out of it apart from several weeks (probably more) of tourment at the site of my dog drowning. I'm puzzled it's even up for debate. The thought of it actually upsets me and saving my dog wouldn't even be up for debate. The dog would win every single time.

What the poll really should be is save a member of your family or save a stranger. That's how I look at it.

My family (inc dogs) > strangers life > random dog.

I can't believe this shit. You'd save your dog and leave the stranger? What the fuck this is truly retarded.

Reasons to save a human:
- kids might depending on them, will have a fucked up life without one parent
- other people depend on them (family)
- are of your own kind
- human life is inherently more valuable than any animal's life because of the potential
each person has to change the world for the better (even if they work as a teacher they have a positive impact, I'm not talking about Einsteins and alike)
- if an animal dies the consequences on the society aren't NEARLY the same as when human dies (think emotional scars relatives will have to bear)

Reasons to save a dog:
- your personal attachment

So what you'all are saying is you're so egotistical you'd disregard reasons to save a human just to keep that dog around you?

Fuck.

This is a crock of shit. You don't think of these things when you have seconds to react to save something, you instinctively go for the FAMILY unit.

No you don't think of that, but you are aware of it.

You KNOW that human life is more valuable than animal's no matter how much you love your pet.

The reason why I listed those reasons is because lyfromdp and others were arguing the dog's life is just as valuable as human's.

What if instead of your dog the animal drowning was your kid's guinea pig? This is getting ridiculous...

For most people their dog is basically part of their family, I would think it would be a natural instinct to save your family over a stranger. Strange dog/strange person your instinct would be the strange person.

Instinct matters because it is a situation where you behave reactively, its not like there is time to sit down an assess the situation objectively.

Actually what is ridiculous is that you say guinea pig instead. Guinea pig or human... What does the poll say...?

The fact is I would save a human over any animal I own - apart from my dog. Which, if you read the top of the thread, is what the poll is about. Maybe you could start a new poll about guinea pigs. Yeah. Do it. That'd be riveting. :)

Unless you mean a strangers guinea pig, but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

THIS.

I'd definitely save MY dog over a stranger, but would save a stranger human over a stranger dog.
