Apple patent looks to lock up jailbreakers - ZDNet

Apple has applied for a patent — titled 'Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorised Users of an Electronic Device' — that covers a series of security measures to automatically protect devices from thieves and other 'unauthorized users'. This terminology apparently applies to those who engage in jailbreaking, which allows devices to run apps not approved by the company producing the operating system — such as Apple, the main target of such bypasses.

The application, which was filed in February 2009 and published Thursday, describes measures to identify "particular activities that may indicate suspicious behavior," so that "safety measures" can be taken to restrict the device's functions. Those activities include the "hacking, jailbreaking, unlocking, or removal of a SIM card", according to the application. Apple also intends to send warnings to owners via email or text message when such activity is detected.

In July, US Copyright Office ruled that bypassing a manufacturer's protection mechanisms to allow "handsets to execute software applications" no longer violates federal copyright law. However, while the US Copyright Office has declared the software legal, Apple has repeatedly discouraged users from loading such a bypass, reminding them that doing so will void their device's warranty.

Great news for other phone developers. Hopefully MS will come out with a bone-crushing phone that will put the Iphone to shame. They do have dibs on multitouch. Fuck Apple. They're greedy bastards that overcharge for their hardware and fuck their users at every possible opportunity. Anyone that doesn't agree with this is obviously too used to kissing Apple's ass for good looking hardware.

"The application also describes a variety of measures that could be used to help identify the unauthorized user, including the activation of a camera that could capture and geotag the device's surroundings, and perhaps current user, and transmit that information to a remote device."

Wow, hard to believe that this is the same company that made the famous 1984 "big brother" commercial. lol

Once verizon gets the iphone...it's game over for android / windows / backberry for the consumer market in the usa...

I'm a PC guy but I disagree with what you say about them "overcharging for their hardware." Price is determined by market demand. Anyone who charges less than what the market is willing to pay is just stupid.

I don't think so. Android has new app inventor software that is so easy that even sarah palin's son could make an app with it. Once they open it up to the public, apple will have some decent competition.

Mind you, Blackberries are still #1 in market share... and almost 99% of Corporations only purchase Blackberries for there employees.... yep, don't think the iPhone will be taking that over.

Not to mention, once Verizon does get the iPhone... goodbye reliable service. AT&T processes more data everyday than all the other cellular companies combined. If you think AT&T sucks... just wait till Verizon gets it. :rasta:

If they'd just lower the prices of their hardware, they'd get a much larger market share. They could raise the price of their Mac Mini to a million dollars and I'm sure a few idiots would still pay it. But they'd be making a lot less money overall because most people would NOT pay that much for a computer. If they made their prices comparable to that of PC's (or maybe a few hundred over), I think they would have the majority of the market share.

notice i said specifically "for the consumer market"...because no other operating system has the security that blackberries do right now, so obviously corps will stick with BB...And I use ATT, and I guess they've upgraded my area, cause they've been really good the past 3 months...

generally their prices are only a hundred or two more than PCs...also, take into consideration that most PC companies use cheap parts, compared to apple using premium parts and charging a few hundred more for the same setup, plus a much better OS...

They're so secure that even the United Arabs Emirates banned their usage within the country because they couldn't even get RIM to give the government backdoor access to spy on the messages and such being transmitted. If I were a businessman visiting dubai to make a deal I wouldn't want the govt there spying on me either seeing as they own most of the corporations in that country.

yes, clearly they should lower their prices since the company has been reporting record low profits lately

My iPhone/ATT contract is almost up...the day it's up I am going to smash this fucking POS iphone with a hammer and post it on youtube, then go buy a droid like the rest of the heterosexual men.

Exactly what I did today (I'm with Verizon now with 2 Droid X's), except I'm keeping my iphones in tact in case I ever get around to developing an app. :)
