So I got this video on youtube and today someone from a reputable TV network contacted me saying they wanted to pay me for permission to use my video on their TV show. Anyone know how this works or how much they would offer for it? I'm probably going to get low balled for it and guessing they will just buy the video out right or pay a royalty every time the episode airs. Any suggestions?

Depending on the show, you might want to go for royalties each time the show airs instead. I know a few people who have been in the same situation and it totally depends on how popular the show is. Popular show with lots of repeats = royalties. Not a lot of repeats = one time payout ($1k-$10k is average)

odds are your gunna get lowballed and there's a high chance of them ignoring any negotiation.... tough situation, would be easier to analyze knowing what your video is roughly so we can make assumptions on what their goals are

Let them offer first, don't throw out a number. Very likely they will want to buy it outright since that's how most shows source video. Go for getting a credit but don't count on getting one.

I will post the video once everything is final. To give you guys an idea of what kind of show it is, it's along the lines of Tosh.0

yeh fucking sell it, unless its a news show you wont get repeats. Only freakin news channels repeat videos 24/7. Good luck make some money

What's the soundtrack? Even if they buy the video outright, if you created the music you still own the rights to it and are entitled to broadcast royalties. But you need to register the music with ASCAP or BMI to get paid. Just throwing that out there.
