How do affiliates feel about signing up for an affiliate program run by the manufacturer of the advertised product, compared to trying out the offer through an established network like Pepperjam? There are a number of Saas affiliate tracking providers, like hasoffers, for example that allows an advertiser to run their own private label program. Are there trust issues? Any other concerns? Things we could do to make it less of a concern?

While we wouldn't have access to the built in affiliate base of an established network, not paying out additional fees to a network would actually let us offer a higher payout. We think we could recruit the affiliates we need by running some targeted ads at various sites (like this one). There are only so many places that you people hang out at online.

Also, this isn't a shameless plug as we're at least 3-4 months away from getting this rolling. I'm not trying to recruit. I'm just trying to get some feedback about how everyone, particularly the full time, professional aff markers feel about private label programs so we can decide what direction to go in.

I think the biggest thing is support for the affiliates, and having yours similar to what the networks provide.

In terms of trust, networks traditionally offer faster payment terms than advertisers, so speeding up the frequency of payment helps.

can you offer things like dedicated reps, 24 hour support, fast payouts, knowledgeable insight and strategy, etc?

I work on the advertiser side (and formerly the network side) and I've gotta say that unless you really have your ducks in a row it's safer to fall under the blanket of a network until such time that you've got enough revenue coming in to make sure your affiliates are taken care of properly.
