I currently am doing both my college work and internet marketing work via a macbook. I love it, but all the icons, files, and folders on my desktop are getting annoying. Plus the fact that it has issues with some programs I'd like to try in the future.

I debated between getting another laptop or a Desktop, and have decided a desktop is better suited. That way I will have to get away and can't carry it around with me everywhere like my macbook.

I'm not looking for anything amazing, but I've got about mid $500's to spend... if you have any suggestions let me know!

You capable of building it? and how much do you care about your monitor, cause that could take up half ur budget for a respectable new one.

I wish I was capable of building one... maybe if I had some directions to. As for a monitor, I'm not really concerned with size because I have a 32 inch Plasma I plan to hook it up to. Although, I still would like an average sized monitor as well. I don't plan to use this thing for anything extravagant, just file organization, a few IM programs/software, Budgeting/financing software. Basically going to be my "business" computer.

I'm more of an SEO person rather than PPC, so I don't need a huge ass decked out monitor and multiple screens for tracking and having loads of stuff up. Just want something durable that I can work with.

desktops are easy to build, there are tons of guides out there. Get yourself a ~$500-700 barebones kit at tiger direct and you'll have a screamin machine

any suggestions for buying a pre-built one? I'd be interested to build it, but I think that would be best suited for summer break. I would need something to use fairly quickly after I purchase it. I'll definitely consider that though as a side project sometime!

I think this looks pretty good for your budget without a monitor.

Should I be weary of AMD processors? Again, I don't know loads about computer infrastructure and the like, but my friend recommended me to go with intel processors over AMD at all costs.

What do you guys think of HP? I'm looking at this with a wireless lan built it: HP Pavilion Slimline s5510 and s5510t series | HP Official Store

AMD has been good for me, i have had a AMD desktop for 2 years or so now can't complain at all, plus they are cheap compared to any of the new Intel cpu's.

You could look for something like a AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550, they are cheap and motherboards are just as cheap, plus add some DDR 3 ram.

Most computer shops will build it for you for cheap $50 or so if you can't build it yourself. Or get a secondhand one.

I think I'd prefer to just buy a pre-built computer. That way I won't have been the reason for any issues. I don't really have the time to group everything together either and need it operational pretty much as soon as it arrives.

hmm well if you want a pc with a operating system all ready to go then by all means get a pre built but expect to pay mega bucks for it.

And since your budget is around 500 or so i would definatley suggest second hand ... there are always ads in the local classifieds about just built computers people are trying to sell.

I'd recommend AMD myself, never had an issue. More power for your buck aswell. They run a little hotter but it's not an issue considering you can overclock most of them with the stock heatsink :P

All the adding in Hard drives and stuff is more than I'd like to do, partially because I've never done it before. I've only ever had 1 computer before and it wasn't a desktop. I just wouldn't want to screw up anything, and the refurbished stuff makes me a bit nervous because it has no warranty.

What about something like this from Dell: The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

You shouldn't worry about AMD, they have been around forever. I have very close friends who swear by them.

Ok... so there goes that myth. I know you guys keep pushing for the do it yourself stuff, and don't get me wrong if it was cars, etc I would have no issues. I just can't afford to buy something refurbished with no warranty or take a chance on breaking something trying to hookup a disc drive.

as for computers - if i were you, i would get exactly what i need nothing above it - dont go with your ego - get the exact spect you are looking for because there always going to be a better computer and chasing computer will be endless

AMD has been around like 40 yrs.. nothing wrong with their processors. Just go with an Athlon or higher.
