Great white shark spotted off of Martha's Vineyard!!

A great white shark was spotted this morning off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard by a group of fishermen, officials said.

The shark, which was confirmed as a great white by a state expert, was circling the carcass of a minke whale off of Gay Head, said Reginald Zimmerman, a spokesman for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
Jeff Lynch of Chilmark, a commercial fisherman who sails out of Menemsha, said he was headed out to go mackerel fishing this morning with two friends when they spotted the dead whale, then saw the great white swimming around underneath it.
“The funny thing is I was going mackerel fishing to get shark bait,” he said.
Lynch said he motored out of Menemsha at about 6 a.m. and spotted the whale carcass and shark at about 7 a.m. about 1 to 1 1/2 miles west of Gay Head. He said they drifted near the site and observed the shark until 7:30 or 7:45 a.m.
“It was kind of following me around,” said Lynch. He said it came, at times, within two feet of his boat.
“I had a few ‘Jaws’ quotes going through my head,” he said. “I go shark fishing all the time. But to see something that size was absolutely incredible.”
He estimated the animal was 20 feet long and weighed 2,000 pounds.
Lynch said he took pictures of the shark and emailed them to state shark expert Greg Skomal, who wanted to tag the large specimen but wasn't able to reach the site in time.
Will Farrissey of Oak Bluffs was on the boat with Lynch and said the shark was the largest he’s seen.
“It was pretty amazing seeing it,” Farrissey. “It is definitely something I’ll remember my whole life.”
The fishermen originally approached the dead whale because Coast Guard officials had asked them to take photos of the whale. When their boat approached, the shark swam below the boat, Farrissey said.
“All we said was, ‘We don’t want to sink now’,” he said.
The encounter ended when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Environmental Police towed the whale carcass away and the shark disappeared, Lynch and Farrissey said.
“What I really want to stress is there’s no need for panic,” said Zimmerman, the state agency spokesman.
Zimmerman said there have been sharks spotted in the area in previous years because they follow seals for feeding.
While no official warning has been released, he stressed people to take caution in the water and avoid areas frequented by seals, a favorite food of the sharks.

I fish in those waters... a lot.

We've had a major surge in the seal population here and they have completely infested all the shores and destroyed a lot of the ecosystem. The GW has learned a new area of where to find a meal. I have seen great whites take seals within 200 yards of the beach. We used to have the occasional GW report. Now they are yearly. Last summer there were over a dozen spotted in one area.

This carcass washed up onto one of the beaches I fish from:

damn!

I remember I found a Seal lying dead on the beach in Huntington Beach. It had its whole face and skull smashed in and was right at the waters edge, so I dragged it onto the sand and looked at it for awhile.

Do you know why would its whole face be smashed in? It had bones sticking out of its face that looked like long skinny skewers on both cheeks, but it didn't have any bite marks anywhere else on its body - just the whole face was smashed in.

Boat propeller? Or hit by a boat?

Unless it was the crypts -- was it wearing colors?

Great Whites can be found in temperate waters everywhere in the world and all points in between since they migrate vast distances. The map on Wikipedia doesn't really tell the whole story...

Something like this is likely more accurate...

When im not on here, I enjoy two sports. I'm obsessed with firearms, and I'm obsessed with scuba diving. Since I live in California, I constantly go to diving in catalina island. When your in a deep blue sea; 60-100feet and you know your in their breeding grounds - it is a bit sketchy. Especially with the stories you here, and especially when you look like a dam seal with a suit and fins. ROFL But whatevz, I've seen sharks but I hope to God I never see a white unless im in a dam cage.

It's their ocean. Every time you step in, you gotta realize that.

Been doing a lot of ocean swims lately. On Sunday, was doin a 1.5 miler with the LA Tri Club and think I saw a seal underwater. Had a minor panic but pulled my shit together and finished the swim. I hate it when it's super clear... it's creepy seeing into the see of nothingness down there.

I dont think I would ever swim in the ocean, ever. I constantly go to the caribbean and either snorkel or scuba dive, that's it. When your swimming, I'm assuming as cardio you never get to see wtf's going on. With what the things I see down in the depths, I'd want to have open eyes through a mask or just gtfo...

I use to surf alot, but I think thats the MAX I'd ever do.

.....and as for the photo, yes - the shits incorrect. Going from cape town to northern australia is fine as thats their breeding habits. Whites don't travel long distances and cover that distance in the red map. That's more for oceanic white tips, etc.

Awesome man, I didn't think there were any other triathletes on WF. I'm up in Wisconsin though, so no ocean swimming for me. Instead I have to deal with nasty sewage pumped into Lake Michigan.

There's nothing I can say to describe how much I love swimming in the ocean. It's a rush and one ridiculous workout. I like swimming as it is, but this is different. That dash of fear makes me want to get my ass back on shore as soon as possible, so I'm hauling ass, but I don't fear it so much that I won't go.

But yeah, the clear days are the worst for me. I'd MUCH rather have it be dark or murky, even though that's bad for other reasons...

Not a triathlete, although I'll do sprint tri's and have 2 planned this year. I just like the ocean swim circuit out here. My biggest one is the last day of July, and then I'm doing a relay at Coronado on 9/11. That will be a touching day.

Unfortunately for me, I'm a pool swimmer - huge walls... which you don't get in the ocean of course, so I'm at a disadvantage with someone who can swim the same pool time as me.

Lake Michigan's not that bad, is it??
