20 ft Great White Shark spotted off Martha's Vineyard

Not a triathlete, although I'll do sprint tri's and have 2 planned this year. I just like the ocean swim circuit out here. My biggest one is the last day of July, and then I'm doing a relay at Coronado on 9/11. That will be a touching day.

Unfortunately for me, I'm a pool swimmer - huge walls... which you don't get in the ocean of course, so I'm at a disadvantage with someone who can swim the same pool time as me.

Lake Michigan's not that bad, is it??

Lake Michigan is pretty gross where I live, but there are certain spots that are clean.

Do you have a background in swimming? I swam competitively for 10 years and got burnt out in the middle of my junior year of high school. I'm 24 now and thinking about training with a local masters group...it'll be fun to see if I can beat my old times.

If like to run, you should look into doing some aquathons (generally something like 1.5k swim/ 5k run).

You don't happen to post on slowtwitch do you?

Fuck sharks man, they scare the shit out of me which is bad because I probably only spend about 1% of every year in ocean water.

When im not on here, I enjoy two sports. I'm obsessed with firearms, and I'm obsessed with scuba diving. Since I live in California, I constantly go to diving in catalina island. When your in a deep blue sea; 60-100feet and you know your in their breeding grounds - it is a bit sketchy. Especially with the stories you here, and especially when you look like a dam seal with a suit and fins. ROFL But whatevz, I've seen sharks but I hope to God I never see a white unless im in a dam cage.

I'd worry more about the Tiger Sharks. I love the beach (from HB, so I grew up bodyboarding), but the older I get - the less I want to be out in the water lol Hell, after watching River Monsters, I'm pretty much OK with being on land. There's a little tiny creek over by my house that Animal Control just found a 6 foot Alligator in, and it's north Texas. Somehow the thing got away and is still in the creek. The neighbor's kid swears he sees it about twice a week. Now they're finding Alligators in all kinds of man made lakes and lakes with no ties to any river systems out here, too.

Water = dangerous.

Yeah well, your fukin nuts lol. I love the ocean just as much as you do I'm sure, but I dont like going in it unless I can see - breathe and have some type of thigh-knife; powerhead or spear gun lol

There's nothing I can say to describe how much I love swimming in the ocean. It's a rush and one ridiculous workout. I like swimming as it is, but this is different. That dash of fear makes me want to get my ass back on shore as soon as possible, so I'm hauling ass, but I don't fear it so much that I won't go.

But yeah, the clear days are the worst for me. I'd MUCH rather have it be dark or murky, even though that's bad for other reasons...

Crazy, yeah I actually have a home in palm springs and on 9th and pch. So I go back and forth :-) Last year, I saw my first Tiger. April of 2010, I was in freeport (Bahamas); and on the north east part of the island there's a place called Paradise Cove; it's about a 1 mile out and the depth is like 5-8feet max the whole way. But once you get to the reef; the shelf just drops into 40-50feet of endless blue. Extremely beautiful.

From my understanding, that location is not far from the infamous tiger beach, which many voluntarily go to dive with these monsters. Pretty crazy. I'm going back in September of this year, so00oo0o0 hopefully I dont see no sharks this time as its pretty scary

I've yet to see a bull. But rest assured, when you have a narly tiger shark within feet of ya; no where to run and with their background of being garbage cans of the sea (eating anything); the last thing they are would be weak. There really big sharks..

The bull sharks hormones are through the roof, which explains why they are a bit more agressive. Regardless, bulls, tigers and whites are just narly anminals I never wanna see unless im in a cage.

Tiger sharks are weak.

It's the bull sharks that will fuck you up good.

Tiger Sharks are the most dangerous of all Sharks. They've been known to attack boats, and were the cause of death for a lot of World War 2 soldiers who had to jump ship. Bull Sharks are dangerous, no doubt, but a Tiger Shark will eat anything, and would destroy a Bull Shark in seconds.

Off of Catalina they caught one that was 20 ft. or so and cut it open. They found a bumper of a VW Beetle with the license plate on it. Apparently the driver of that car went missing and that was all they found of the car. Tiger Sharks are by far the most dangerous of all, but the Great White gets all the talk.

Spearfisher. Like to cruise the buffet before deciding on tonight's meal. Most sharks in the keys are nurse / reef and benign. For those that don't like being in the ocean grab an 80cf in a spot with 60+ of viz and just sit on the bottom for a few mins. It is amazing what will come out and swim right by you when your still and blend with the reef. There always around you. Your just normally making too much noise to catch it.
