Then going on till I couldn't anymore...

The trick is to keep the biggest piece in one corner and work your way towards that corner. I liked the left side, so I kept working from right to left until it got to the left corner. I NEVER push the up arrow cause that could cause a 2 underneath my highest box, and that's a disaster. Left, right, or down, ONLY up if it's about to be game over. And be patient with your blocks, just because two numbers appear, doesn't mean you have to work towards merging them. Focus on eliminating 2s and 4s like droplister stated.
