Interesting. It looks like Bill Gates and Paul Allen couldn't convince Steve Ballmer to join them.

This is a nice gesture but a fat stack of paper only goes so far even if it is 600 billion dollars.
Imagine the kind of change these business greats would make if they pooled their knowledge and talents to create a chain of self sufficient schools, for example (this has already been done at least once that I know of). For something like this the return is infinite.
I don't know, not trying to belittle the gesture at all. But IMO what nonprofit charities need isn't more money, it's innovation, framework for solid self sufficiency, and business accumen.

As much as I don't like Microsoft, Gates charitable work is incredibe This TED talk of Bill Gates is pretty good. It's especially about improving education (he's talking about the US here but I'm sure he'll do his best to use the money most efficiently). Tell me about it. They'd blow it all in a month by giving it to the military. Seriously....you know things are majorly fucked up when several dozen of the richest people's money COMBINED isn't even enough to pay for a month of spending of the US military.
i'm glad he's going to use his money on this, instead of fucking up star wars even more.
paying for the security of all those other nations isn't cheap.

I'd like those 83% to put their money where their mouth is. It's easy to say you would, but it's highly doubtful many of them actually would. You don't have to be a billionaire to donate half your money to charity. Give most average people a substantial amount of cash and they wouldn't be donating it to charity.
