I don't think a knife 3 on 1 would help much anyways. Yeah, you might get a couple cuts in, but that will just infuriate them even more and they will get the knife away from you. Would suck to die by your own knife.
In that situation you'd be too fucked up from the 3 sucker punches to even attempt to get your gun out, let alone aim it and shoot all 3 of them without either having the gun stolen from you or shooting yourself accidentally in the process.
if they have no knives and you have one, you could defeat 5 people at least in quick succession. but if you have no idea how to use it yeah they could get it away from you, but if you're proficient with it it would actually be enjoyable toying with them. if they are not carrying any weapons of their own they probably would just back off.

The problem is that this will escalate the fight. If one of them is carrying a knife or a gun, which is very possible, your life is over.
Also, as mentioned there are potential legal risks with stabbing someone. If you're going to carry something, I would recommended a tazer or stun gun, even though some may think it is a pussy thing, it is probably the best option.
Of course the most secure thing would be a gun (Glock 18 or Scorpion would be nice), but like I said, potential legal consequences. Although in my state, you can conceal and would likely win in a court case against these guys.
Atleast you know you're in a position to win with a gun.. And with a tazer, you don't actually have to be close to them, although that doesn't help against three people.

This is why you grab the one you can and put the knife to their neck to just like a robber in a hostage situation. The others will run and the one your holding will freeze up like a bitch. If he did try to do shit you got him dead and the others will think twice unless they have a gun/knife as well, which is why you use the one like a hostage/shield
The best thing to do in such a situation is to go in like a fetal position, wrapping your arms around your head and protecting your genitals by raising your knees and bringing them up against your chest. About 10 years ago 3 guys jumped me outside a bar (was too hammered to remember why) and that's exactly what I did. When I woke up the next morning I only had a few bruises here and there, not even a scratch on my face/head.

I actually did cut a guy up pretty bad once. It's not something that's very pretty, but because of the laws where I lived I only spent a couple months in jail before they threw the case out.

Personally, I'd be too worried to carry any form of weapon, purely for the fact that I have no experience with them, and even if I did I'd be worried that they'd be wrestled off me and used against me.
Thing with martial arts is, no one can take your hands and feet off you. Get to a certain point in martial arts, and your limbs are deemed lethal weapons.
Learn to attack AND defend yourself, and mess people up. That's my plan anyway. I worry less for myself most of the time, and more for my girl. It only takes one or more drunk yobs to think they're big tough guys to come and intimidate me and hit on my girl, or even worse, and shit hits the fan.
I plan, when I got some free time away from college and work, to invest money in learning some BJJ and Muay Thai.
