So I've been tossing around this idea for several months.. My wife sparked the idea because she wanted a way to find other local moms of young children for play dates and stuff, because she doesn't have her own friends with kids yet.

She told me it'd be great if there was a site dedicated to helping moms find other local moms. I told her it'd probably be too niche, but thought maybe it'd be worth it if I started a site that would cater to all sorts of purposes for finding groups of people with similar interests.. Musicians / Nerds / Moms / Pregnant / Affiliates even etc..

I don't know why but I like the ".co" domain extension that just opened up and regged "Flocks.co" for the site..

I quickly designed this home page concept..

(and yes, I know there are istockphoto watermaks on some of the illustrations.. didn't want to spend several hundred purchasing gfx if I decide to not follow through with it :) - and also the bottom big piece of land looks like shit, this was just a quick mock and would definitely improve that area.)

What do you guys think? I was thinking it'd be heavily integrated into facebook as much as possible to help it spread; and launch in a few select cities with fb advertising campaigns..

Think it could work? Not sure I want to invest time into it dev'ing if there holes in the idea I'm not thinking of..

ridiculously good design man, love it.

I think there's room for something like meetup but with a more friendly/social feel as opposed to a professional feel.

Biggest thing is getting people to use it. Greatest design in the world doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a user base. Then you get to have fun monetizing

Being older than most of you guys I can appreciate the idea behind this. Will it go viral anytime soon ? Toss up. However the concept is sound and might just be a hit.

If you don't want to develope the site let me have it.

I like the concept. To market it start in 1 city only. Also, people are going to wonder who people are that they're meeting up with so maybe tie into their fb profile some how so they can learn about one another. Just a thought.

Design looks great. In regards to your comment about it being too niche, I don't agree at all. I'm a firm believer that you find a need for a particular group (often the more specific the better), then you attack it hard. I used to always think "big" when looking at opportunities, but the more experience I get under my belt the more I realize that's the wrong approach. In short, think small and targeted and meet the needs of your customer / user 1000x better than anyone else (if anyone is even doing it). Unexpected opportunities for growth and scale have a funny way of emerging from the ether. Just ask Mark Zuckerberg about his site for college students.

Sick design, but good luck competing with meetup.com

Still, you could easily sell it off if you decide not to go through with it yourself.

Facebook Connect, takes care of the user management and would overcome hesitation of some people that wouldn't want to register to yet another social website.

@Gary, great design man. I think you'll have a tough road ahead of you against the established players but if you're passionate about the idea no reason that should stop you.

Great design and great idea, Gary.

Regarding meetup, there are probably a few things you can improve upon. Just like folks are starting to come up with ideas to steal groupon's lunch. Zuckerberg probably thought about how to improve upon myspace. Same thing here. The space has room for more than a few.

Better products, better service, lower prices... that's how it happens. The idea doesn't need to be revolutionary. Just needs to offer an improvement that draws customers.

Again, nice work.

The Dade county Chihuahua Meetup group isn't friendly/social? In fact none of the groups on the front page have a professional feel, they're all pretty casual. That being said I think the design is going somewhere positive... not sure about the dirt tornadoes things but I get what you're trying to do and it's looking pretty good.

A lot of moms I know just use Meetup.com to find other moms in these types of scenarios.

honestly, I don't use meetup, but I have a couple of douchebag acquaintances who send me their "how to use social media to propel your coffee shop to million dollars in profit a year" meetup invites constantly so I figured it was full of a bunch of fluffers

thx for the responses.. yeah I'm torn between doing this and not doing it. I know it'll be quite a bit of work between doing all the design and coding.. + with a beast like meetup.com around, eeehhh!
