Does anybody have a website about a topic they care about, rather than a strictly moneymaking thing?

I am thinking of starting a travel website because I love to travel. I found an okay(ish) domain that fits, and would post travel pics still sitting on the camera. Of course, I'd talk ad nauseum about my travel interests at the site.

If anybody else is running a site just for enjoyment, what are your interests? :costumed-smiley-087

great topic. i have a website for each of what i consider my main interests. didn't care about monetizing them initially, but i find myself doing so anyway.

I've got a site I've been building for about 9 years now. It focuses on a certain type of collectors and all of the various textures, shades of orange, and angle of conical growth of construction cones.

ive got a golf site....doesnt make me a penny.
i use it to keep track of my golf scores...handicap..etc
i also put reviews up about golf courses i have played at.
some others have found it and also put up reviews now and then.
if i ever retire id like to just update it all day, and make it better.

are you saying you literally have no free time at all?

Yeah pretty much other than when I'm on vacation. I took a second job for nights/weekends and have a commute to my day job.

I even let my medical grow die mid flower because I couldn't even water it and empty the dehumidifier.

see, i just dont understand that. why would you not monetize it just because you can? its like having a golf store on main street with a bunch of equipment and gear sold at cost just because you always wanted to have a golf store. why??

explain that logic, i'm curious.

I once had a spirituality/religion/philosophy/mythology/psychology website I would yammer on about, writing post-graduate type essays on it on whatever topic I was currently studying for fun. It's still live, although it's switched domain names a couple times, and what not. I think a couple guys here have even seen it.

It made me some monies, but more than anything, I got crazy fan mail from all around the world. It got tons of natural links because my viewpoints were not only stirring some jimmies but also inspiring people. I had a group of Hindu's carrying on about my interpretation of 'samskaras' and getting all pissy about another non-educated white man pretending to know what he's talking about. I even had one email where a guy told me that my site was his new Bible (lol). It was fun and I'd love to have kept going with it, but it wasn't really ROI worthy, and even with free time it demanded so much effort.

If I had kept pushing it, I could probably have jump started some kind of career as an author. If anyone has a hobby, pursue it with a website! You never know. I gave it my all, literally, and people responded. They can tell when it's genuine and authentic.

I have been running a forum since 2005. My interest in the subject matter waxes and wanes, but I love my community.

It is probably the one site I am most proud of since I started having my own websites in 2002.

Forums don't make money usually and this one is no exception.

I have a site about a medical procedure I had a few years ago. I write about my experience before and after. Very easy to write about, because it's based entirely on my own experience.

Payday loans have always excited me. I can churns out 10-15 posts per day on that topic. I don't make any money from it, but man, I will continue to write on it. I have like 350000 email subscribers who wants me to send them email excerpts of all the blog posts I send. They have often written me feedback asking me to mail the the best Payday offers, but since I only email excerpts of my posts, I hardly send them any such emails. Also it might seem like a conflict of interest if I were to start telling them which were the best offers. I mean, here I am writing unbiased blog posts on Payday loans, and if I start writing reviews of the best offers, some of readers will start feeling like I have sold out like many other shitty Payday sites.

I have thought of putting adsense since I would have no control over the ads and thus free me from conflict of interest, since the ads will be shown based on relevancy. But then I learnt about site targeting, so no adsense either.

I have a few links to charitable organizations or compulsive gamblers etc All for free.

Did I mention that I love Payday. I am passionate about payday loans. It has helped so many needy. It is the next best thing after sliced bread. Oh my God, I could go on and on and on about payday loans..

I've thought about doing that. I had brain surgery a few months ago and would have plenty to write about. Misdiagnosed 3x, $74k surgery, spinal tap, and still living on chronic opiates in my 20's.
