ABANDON SHIP! BRICS Just signed agreement to destroy the USD.

Or just move to Thailand? ;)

But just in case it gets that bad for most americans, is there a well-tested list out there of what you should buy to survive a real financial crisis if you only have 10K and see it coming? A real list of X number of bullets, X number of canned beans, etc..?

Shit, I wouldnt be able to compile this list unless I gave it serious thought. But I wouldnt spend anything on precious metals. I'd probably spend $1k on rice (20lbs $10 at the store = 2,000lbs of rice). I would then spend $3k on 3 tricked out Ar-15's with some good part/cleaning kits given shit goes south with basic scopes. I would then spend $1,000 on health/medical $200 going towards antibiotics. So that's an even $5k. I would then buy PMC 7,000 rounds 223 at $300 a brick ($2,100). I would then buy 2; 2LR at Big5 or similar sporting good stores for $150/ea (300 total) and blow the remaining $600 on about 15,000 rounds of 22lr for bird/squirrel hunting. Maybe by a night vision scope, cammo, traps, etc or blow the rest on strip clubs cuz its gonna end.

Private currencies are not legal. Governments hate private currencies because it competes with their fiat monopoly over the country, through which they get their control. E-gold, 1mdc, e-bullion, liberty dollars, and more have been shut down by the US government. Yes the liberty dollars had the "copyright infringement" if you will of the $ denotation along with coin shape. The others did not. Bitcoin has this going for it, but as it takes off, you can bet Uncle Sam will be shutting her down pronto.

There is only one legal currency of the USA, the Federal Reserve Note. Yes there are tiny local currencies but they are smalltime and should they grow, they're a threat and will be shut down. After all, they can't tax it and therefore lose their control over you. The states all use FRN exclusively, all except for one, Utah. (although others are considering it)

Utah is the only state where real money (gold, silver) is legal. Silver and Gold have been re/de monetized a few times in our history but they were totally separated from the dollar in 1971. Utah has now (March '11) remonetized them.

In Utah, you are not taxed on gold's increase in value or purchase. In Utah you can settle lawsuits in silver and gold. Contracts are enforced in gold, silver. At the federal level and all other states, it would Not be enforced and legal tender laws will force you to use Federal Reserve notes for these situations. In Utah you can pay state taxes in silver and gold. That's money.

People have tried using gold before as payment, and have been thrown in jail as the economic terrorist the IRS sees them as.
Use real money, go to federal prison | Random Ramblings from IowaDawg

^ He used the arbitrage of face value and market value to escape paying high employment taxes and his workers wages were "under reported" according to the IRS. Funny that just 80 years ago the government minted those coins that say $50...and now they demand you can't spend it as $50, the amount etched in the coin.

Say you and I have an agreement to build my house for 1000 ounces of silver. I pay you 500 up front, and the rest when it is finished. You finish the house. I refuse to pay. We go to court (federal/local/state, doesn't matter as they all refuse g&s) and find out the court will not enforce the contract. They will in Federal Reserve notes, which I think we both can agree are not as valuable as gold.

So there is a difference between legal and acceptable. Yes, most people will accept a gold coin if you choose to pay them in that way. That is their choice. And it is Gresham's Law at work. But, federal law is clear: Gold and silver are not currency, only Federally issued Federal Reserve notes are currency.

fuck that bet it all on mega millions. If you buy 1 million tickets you have a 1 in 175 chance of winning 500 mil. Seems like a good bet to me!
Buy 175million tickets and you will have 100% to win 500mil. Triple your money!

Yup off the top of your head that's a good start. Off the top of my head I'd add dried beans/lentils, good binoculars, water filters and purification drops, survival knives, a frame pack, fresnel lens, gas mask, heirloom seeds in nitrogen, a few hundred pounds of soil builders & nutrients, solar battery charger, vitamins, minerals, and a shit ton of 12ga shells.

You want precious metals for barter if nothing else. And fuck the ars buy aks. and a couple glocks and a remington 700 bolt action rifle with a long range scope.

Wouldn't mind a WF survivalist thread. h8 on Dresden all you want but he has the common sense to put some of his money where it very well matter most.

Some good lists up there. Gotta say, though, that it's a lot of work and expense preparing. In contrast, if you have a place to live in a village in a developing country there is a lot less to do to prepare 'cuz they live like that every day already. Some of the old people in Thailand, like my mother-in-law, lived through the occupation by Japan during WWII and the only thing they noticed was shortages of a few items when transportation from the big cities completely stopped. All the local markets were still full of produce, meats and basic essentials. I think it will be much the same when the really big shit hits the fan in the near future, although internet access will probably be hosed :-(

This could get ugly. Theoretically.

However. we're talking about Brazil, Russia, India, & China. Not exactly governments with a whole lot of integrity.

The alliance will increase gas prices temporarily. but when the price is right, one of the BRIC countries will snap and start selling oil to us. ---everyone has a price. The alliance will fail. ---I hope.

The Fed will go through a process of tightening monetary policy in 2013making US debt a much more lucrative investment, and a stronger dollar.

There's plenty of oil on this planet. The issue is pumping out our supply fast enough.

Ok so inflation skyrockets, China is the first to get fucked, because their goods are more expensive.

USA has the most sophisticated financial machine it's not even funny.

I personally haven't seen unusual selling activity in US securities.

No heavy hoard buying of precious metals. Precious metals have been bearish the past year.

It's a bull market.

Gotta say it... Started investing in tin yet Lukep?

:offtopic:

LOL! Good memory bro!

Yeah, back then, (and heck, even last week) I wouldn't have even imagined such a solid stand against the USD. I mean think about it; each time one dictator or country rose up to oppose it, we'd bomb the shit out of them before another could arise... So of course I couldn't have guessed that SEVEN countries are making a stand here in 2012 already! Could you?

Fuck. Mind warping-times we're headed for. What are you invested in?

i thought the world was ending when "iran started trading in other currencies" back on march 20th? is this like a do-over?

^ More like shit just got real. Iran going it alone just invited another invasion. The BRICS are a little different story.

WTF is this? Bernake's Propaganda machine at work?

First of all, you're too fixed on oil trading. You seem to think that it could get ugly at the pump and not much else.

This sad underestimation of the situation totally ignores the MANY TRILLIONS of USDs that are sitting in accounts not doing anything, or worse, being undersold, when they are meant to be out getting traded for oil and all of the other things the World Reserve Currency is meant to be used for.

With those dollars sidelined, the market is flooded with USD that the bankers don't need anymore. They'll try to lend it out but fewer ppl want to borrow it, so they'll lowball each other and on and on until the dollar can't buy a damn penny.

The fact that we aren't going to be the WRC anymore is a fall from a tremendously artificially-inflated height. The fed has been building up the buck since the 70's as the one universal currency worldwide, when it's actually built on NOTHING AT ALL. Nada.

Like a bitcoin but with no scarcity, because the fed prints all they want.

...But you can't print your way out of a flooded market.

I hope you are right about this much. That will give me the chance to get out of the dollar at a decent exchange rate.

Luke, just a quick point... getting hysterical never helped anyone, eh? I think we all know the trajectory the world is going, so things like this aren't exactly a huge surprise. We all knew it was coming, and it will probably continue getting worse.

I remember for quite a while, I was always hesitant whether I should stay in Thailand, or leave and go back home. Especially over the past 10 months though, as I've watched current events unfold, I'm quite happy I'm here. Even if shit hits the fan, I'll be surprised if I feel it much. I'm in the middle of an abundance of farmland, and for example, the majority of our groceries come from the market 500m down the road, and they get their shit from the farmers 20kms down the road. It'd take quite a bit to disrupt that tiny distribution cycle.

Anyway, point was get the info out, but leave out the "OMG! We're all doomed!!!" message. That doesn't help.

and just wait and see how the "liberals" are going to say how wonderful it is that "small/weak" countries (like China, Russia and Brazil) are disconnecting from the USD, when all of these countries are looking to become the new global bully.

Ya but how are you going to pay for it? You make your money in USD right?

All our online monies are in USD...

Ya but how are you going to pay for it? You make your money in USD right?

That is an issue. If you have money banked already you need to get it out of the US and into your locale and local currency so you can use it before it becomes worthless or you can't move it at all due to currency controls. Thailand has already been black listed for not doing enough to please some western money laundering watchdogs. FATCA goes into effect Jan 2013 and many banks around the world are already closing their doors to US citizens.

If you still need to earn money to live then you need to earn it local. If you are completely tied to USD you are going to have a rough time no matter where you are, US or another country.
