Adobe: “Go Screw Yourself Apple”

...
The claws are out. Adobe’s Platform Evangelist, Lee Brimelow retaliated today against Apple blocking Flash developers on the iPhone with a post on his Flash Blog.

Brimelow holds little back, lambasting the company for trying to exert a “tyrannical control over developers…more importantly, wanting to use developers as pawns in their crusade against Adobe.” He says any real developer could not support Apple’s moves in “good conscience.”

“Personally I will not be giving Apple another cent of my money until there is a leadership change over there. I’ve already moved most of my book, music, and video purchases to Amazon and I will continue to look elsewhere. Now, I want to be clear that I am not suggesting you do the same and I’m also not trying to organize some kind of boycott.”

Brimelow may not be explicitly calling for a boycott (although he is requesting a change in leadership— is he looking at you Jobs?). But he is issuing a call to arms to developers. The lines are clear: you either stand with us or against us and if you’re against us (and complicit in Apple’s policies) then you’re not a real developer.

And if his sentiment wasn’t clear throughout the post, he caps it all off with: “Go Screw Yourself Apple.”

...

Fun...

Fuck techcrunch and their sensationalist grasping-for-clicks headline.

The guy doesn't speak for Adobe and says so explicitly.

But it did say it the "letter" was vetted by Adobe and a sentence was redacted.

Not that it matters one way or the other, 95% of the users out there don't give two shits about platform pissing contests as long as their stuff works. Google has fought pretty hard to minimize flash where possible (youtube is a legacy acquisition and there is no flash in google apps) so unless there is a big shift in either Apple or Google Adobe is on the expressway to niche vendor status with graphic designers and publishing people as their only audience if flash is no longer needed for RIA experiences.

I think Apple is being very shortsighted imposing arbitrary restrictions on development. They're hurting themselves in the long run by limiting the availability of software to those people that use their specific dev platform and go through their store.

They've been "hurting themselves" long before they hit a million apps in the market.

AdMob’s monthly report on mobile device web traffic has come out. The report measures smartphone marketshare based on how many of each device visits websites, and while the iPhone was #1 in internet usage, it saw some of its lead disappear to multiple Android devices.

The five most popular Android devices last month, again, based on web traffic, were the Motorola Droid, HTC G1, Motorola CLIQ and HTC Hero. While the iPhone accounts for 44% of smartphone web traffic, all the listed Android devices make up 42%, so Google’s little OS that could is quickly gaining ground on the iPhone OS.

The iPhone OS lost 2.4% of it’s OS share last month while Android saw a 2.7% gain.

How much do you think of that could be attributed to the fact that Android isn't a paranoid, limited-development platform?

I would not invest in Apple right now, personally. I think the iPad is going to be a big flop once the fanboy testicle lick fest is over.

I attribute those numbers more to the fault of AT&T than anything.

Take example of what happens when you have poor credit (which seems to be most of the mainstream US now days)

"I want an iPhone"
"K, lets qualify you with AT&T"
"Ok you'll need to pay 700$ deposit, but you get that back after the first year... or you can buy the iphone without a contract for 500 (ish?)"

Or you can goto TMobile
"I want a MyTouch (or G1, or Cliq, etc)"
"you can pay 99$ (approx) with a 2 year contract, or 380 (approx) without contract"
"I want to pay 99$ but I don't have good credit"
"Not a problem, you can just pay your month's bill ahead with flexpay"

(PS: while the android platform itself is very open, a good number of developers of higher caliber especially those already producing on the iPhone, are weary due to how incredibly easy it is to steal an app on the android market)

Possible, I've heard a lot of shit talk about AT&T. I inherited AT&T from my Cingular subscription a few years ago, but I haven't had any problems with them. I actually get a decent rate on our two lines because of my wife being former Air Force.

But again, I don't do data, I only use voice, so I personally don't see the data network issues that are the primary complaint about AT&T.

We'll see how things work out in the long run.
