Affiliate Manager Expectations

Oh..yes.

As an AM, strive to understand your biz from end to end.

At least, know a little bit about it.

I just ran into this when one AM did NOT know about international payments.
Questions like:
- When is the cheque sent out?
- Are there rules of thumbs about how long they take to arrive?
- ..etc...

You don't need to know every little tiny thing, but know a bit about the whole process.
From the beginning:
- How to apply
- How to get approved
- Criteria for new affiliates
- criteria for pages to be approved

Via the middle
- What campaigns do we have?
- What campaigns are rocking?
- What campaigns are COMING UP?

To the end
- When are payments processed?
- When are payments sent out?
- What payment options are there?
- How are referrals going to be paid?
- How can we pay affiliates located out of the US?
..

As in any business, you are going to be a shining star if you know YOUR BUSINESS.

I think that the RSS feed could be effective only to a point. It might help you get new offers running quicker, since you would be alerted to it, but at the same time, it's just another thing to check out in your busy day. How many emails per day do you get already from your networks and AM's telling you about their new offers?

As far as using RSS feeds to let people know of payout changes or offers going down, it could be helpful, but there is no substitute for a phone call or a direct email to let you know when your cash cow is about to start redirecting. I highly doubt that affiliates would be comforted by having it placed back on them to know whether their offers were going to go down.

Ah. One thing I'd like to add.
Don't send me e-mail. Seriously.
Contact me on IM or phone. Every email address I've had lately has had to be abandoned because of networks sending godamn "top offers" every 15 minutes. If it wasnt important enough to tell people individually, it probably wasn't important enough to tell anyone.

I know this isn't AM's fault really, but damn. At least don't turn it on by default.

What I would expect...

Tools per aff needs, example content, coupons, key words (where possible), best sellers, hot products, price comparisons.
Timely replies, note not all aff managers are connected to a network, some are agency run, so payment to affiliates may not fall to the agency to pay but would certainly be in the position to apply pressure, but Im curious, how many affiliates still don't get paid on time?, First rule of thumb is “pay the affiliates”
I would expect my affiliate manager to be able to tailor individual requests per affiliate needs (where possible)
I would expect my affiliate manager to ensure transparent Ts & Cs and beak them down into laymans terms. I would expect my affiliate manager to be working with me rather then competing against me. I would expect my affiliate manager to arbitrage (where possible) cut deals, increase commissions (where possible) based on performance. Have a in depth understanding of the advertisers business and did I really see some one post “should understand affiliate marketing'?
Expectations should be high, but keep in mind their will be some occasions where by the affiliate manager my be handcuffed (not in the kinky way) in terms of not being able to see advertiser analytics in terms of key words by way of just one example. I would expect my affiliate manager to exercise due diligence and not see affiliates as collective sheep. Finally, I would expect my affiliate manager to make me coffee in the morning and do my tax returns :0)

At the risk of sounding obnoxiously Web 2.0, if networks had more RSS feeds, I would be trying new offers more frequently. To echo Riley, it's insane that there are frequent changes made before notifying affiliates.

Copeac launched some RSS feeds today. Check them out when you log in to your account.

Hey Mike, don't know if you'll read this but Kamila over at your network is freaking awesome. That goes for any of you affiliates at Copeac as well, if you need a great AM, ask for Kamila.

She's extremely helpful and always quick to respond, whether it be via email or IM.

I have no idea what I want from an AM. The ones I have talked with gave me bullshit info, and with the others we have a silent mutual "do not disturb" agreement. (HarveyJ is an exception, he can bug me all day long)

Oh, I got an email today giving me a payout bump due to volume. I replied "ok, thx".

No one responded to the Twitter question of what you guys would want? I can see this as kind of being annoying but I guess you can always remove if it's not adding any value to you.

Put everything on an RSS feed. Update continously.

Pay me my money now.

Stop IMing , tweeting, emailbombing and phoning me, just leave me the fuck alone unless I call YOU. I'm not your fucking bowling buddy, I don't give a rat's ass how your day is going. Mine sucks 'coz you're IMing me with bullshit.

That's it - put all the changes into an RSS, pay me fast, leave me be.
