From: US students spark racism row with bake sale - Yahoo! News

A California students' group has sparked a racism and sexism row over plans for a bake sale in which people are charged according to their ethnic background and gender.

Campus Republicans at the University of California, Berkeley say critics have overreacted to their event planned for this week, which they insist is a protest over affirmative action.

The group's Facebook page lists the price of baked goods at the sale according to race: $2 for whites, $1.50 for Asians, $1 for Hispanics, $0.75 for blacks and $0.25 for Native Americans.

"$0.25 FOR ALL WOMEN!" it added.

Campus Republican President Shawn Lewis said the idea of the "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" was to highlight a legislative bill to let California public universities consider race and gender in their admissions process.

He said they planned to go ahead with the sale on Tuesday despite protests and threats. "We didn't expect the volume, the amount of response that we got," he told CNN.

"In the first few hours, hundreds of posts on our Facebook page. And the tone of some of the responses -- we expected people to be upset. We didn't expect personal threats to be made.

"They were implicit and explicit threats made to the organizers of the event, from burning down the table to throwing our baked goods at us and other kinds of physical threats."

But the famous US college's student Democrats president Anais LaVoie has asked for an apology.

"The way they made the statement, the words that they used, the fact that they humorized and mocked the struggles of people of color on this campus is very disgusting to me," LaVoie said, cited by ABC television.
So how does WF feel about affirmative action? Is it necessary to level the playing field in the long run, or is it a crock of shit?

Studies show that minorities who are accepted into higher places of learning through AA usually do just as well as whites. The problem with a lot of minority students is that they don't have the community support (good schools, caring parents, free time, safe environments) that whites do, but on the whole they are able to achieve the same results if given the opportunity. As an investment, it can be seen as working out as it lifts minorities out of poverty, and improves impoverished communities for that reason.

However my personal opinion on AA is generally mixed as taking away opportunities for people who have rightfully achieved them is very anti-American in my view. However it may be a necessary evil.

I think that people who for some reason haven't gotten what they want out of life see a level playing field as "unfair", therefore try and make it "fair". They racist, but they don't even know it.

Entrance into public colleges should be race and gender blind. Anything else is state-sponsored racism and sexism.

Okay, if community, good schools, caring parents and safe environments are the issue, then aren't those the issues we need to fix?

You're putting a fucking bandage on their situation and fucking the hell out of people who deserve it.

However it may be a necessary evil.

Anything that's evil is not necessary, especially when there are much better alternatives, like fixing the cause of the issue.

It's the same thing the government has done / is doing by bailing out all the fucking banks, creating massive inflation. It's addressing a problem with a terrible solution.

For every minority that receives entrance into a college or a job opportunity due to affirmative action, there's another human being that is being affected in the opposite direction.

They've taken it down but the original post was pretty funny

Affirmative action is cancer. It just perpetuates racism and creates more problems in the long run.

That's hilarious what those students are doing, and the funny part is libs are getting butthurt, but they're doing the exact same thing these indoctrinated liberals believe in.

The people making threats are stupid as all hell, the purpose of the 'bake sale' was to ultimately promote equality (AA is inherently racist because it assumes minorities are less likely to get into college than whites, at the end of the day that's exactly what it is) and these people think they are the racist ones. What a big racist mess, I'm sure glad I turned out white and don't have to worry about any of that stuff.

This is random as hell but I couldn't help but laugh at your post count (Posts: 666).

Affirmative action only helps people who have the resources to get into and go to college anyway. So it`s not going to lift poor blacks or whoever out of poverty, it`s just going to maintain a token middle class from that race. Improvements have to be made at the community level, creating quality schools in inner cities that are more equal to those in richer communities.

Legalize drugs to drop the prices. That way there is more money for college.

LOL !

Well, don't you think a way to fix these issues would be educating the people who live there and getting them better jobs? You can use government spending to build schools, fix roads, and hire more police, but if the population remains uneducated and don't have good jobs, these communities would break apart again.

If anything, affirmative action is nothing like a band aid, it's probably the best long term solution we have to the issue. Educating the lower class is probably one of the only ways to get rid of poverty.

Right, but for all intents and purposes all that really means is that white students instead of going to their first pick schools might have to bump down one notch. Hardly a death sentence, as studies show that where specifically you go to school isn't as important as the person that you are.

I think you're confusing minority students with poor students. Or do you think middle class minorities have more of these problems than poor whites? If you want to level a playing field shouldn't preferential treatment be given based on income level rather than skin color?

Affirmative Action is a cancer eating at the psyche of blacks in this country where they are taught that they can't succeed on their own without help. Real good message to teach young black kids.

Right. But its usually pretty difficult to determine someone's income from a college application, and it is very likely if you pick a Hispanic or Black they are going to be poor. There is also institutionalized racism meaning being a black/Hispanic person is on the whole a negative factor in attaining work or education.

Man I can't figure out what the hell could even be done to fix some of the really bad schools. You've got students that damn near run teachers out of their jobs and a culture that makes you an outcast if you actually try to succeed.

Edit: In Outliers there's a discussion of that school they send that little girl to where she has to study her ass off and end up losing all of her lazy ass friends, and that sounds like a great start.

So get rid of race and go by FAFSA Estimated family contribution. Students shouldn't be denied for having high income however, the same way they shouldn't be denied for "hmm we need more Hispanics, let's replace a few white kids"

This REALLY surprises me. My impression is that the minorities exceed the performance of the white people.

Any time I've been in an advanced class with Orientals, Indians, etc they are the high performers! Those lower-income minorities are dedicated to success, and the slacker white guys often just can't keep up with the immigrants.

There is no way being a low-income minority should make you perform as poorly as the average white slacker.

Obviously being a minority is not the problem. Success requires effort and dedication, regardless of racial group and income group.

What about when we're talking about affirmative action in employment? Minorities being hired over more qualified/deserving whites because companies have "race quotas" to fill, especially in the current economic environment where finding jobs are very difficult?

My wifes father was fucked out of a job that opened up just above him, he didn't get it because he was white and they needed to hire a black guy. What happened was he had to end up doing the black guy's job because he had no clue wtf was going on.

Surely you can't be for AA in employment.

Agreed as a minority I had to face the struggles of being a hispanic and living in a white society litered with golf coarse every couple of miles and see trashed yet like new BMW's, Mercedes-Benz, Buicks, Audi's, and Lexus' line the street of my neighborhood with lush green yards that were attended by usually whites and other skinned people. It's so tragic what a Hispanic person like me has had to deal with man wearing Abercrombie & Fitch having a new car forced on me when I turned 16. I didn't ask for any of it, it's just the cards I was delt with....

if any of you pricks think for a second I am the only minority to experience such things you are DEAD WRONG there were several other Hispanics, Asians, Indians (both kinds), and black who had to go through my same struggles all because of the color of our skin, it's sad unless you have been through it your self.

N, but seriously, your comments make me laugh have you heard of FASFA it's based off of income you only need to go by race if you are racist, sounds like you are.

FYI, yes I am Hispanic and did have to deal with that up bringing, yeah it sucked I know.
