Affirmative Action Bake Sale

FYI, yes I am Hispanic and did have to deal with that up bringing, yeah it sucked I know.

And now you have to deal with all us gay webmasters who think people like you don't stand a chance without our generous hand-outs.

Never-mind, affirmative action is really just to make us feel virtuous, it doesn't have to make sense to the minorities.

forgot to mention affirmative action is FUCKING RETARDED never even bothered trying to utilize it.... I'm not racist and don't need the government's help!

Wrong minorities lol. In this context, "minority" is just a nice way of saying blacks and hispanics.

If I understand you correctly, people are saying that some poor and disadvantaged minorities deserve more unfair treatment than others.

So what's the bake sale price for the former president, or did he get into Yale solely on his academic record?

it is very likely if you pick a Hispanic or Black they are going to be poor.

More likely, but the majority of blacks and hispanics do not actually live in poverty. The poverty rates are also different for dropouts, high school graduates, and graduates who apply to college.

lulz. When I asked for a source, I meant an actual statistical source, not the opinion of an author.

lulz. All books are 100% opinion? He didn't give you a page number, but books and newspaper articles can be sources, even if they might not count as concrete proof.

There is a reason black kids have low self-esteem and think they can't make it in this world without a handout, and policies like Affirmative Action are a big reason why.

Source?

in reality they're just racists that don't think blacks and hispanics can succeed without their help.

Source?

I think you answered your own question didn't you?

No? An article in the NY Times about the recent speed of light announcement counts as a source, even though the NY Times staff obviously wasn't running the experiments.

And as to your question of source, it's logic. If somebody believes a group of people are not capable of succeeding without help because of their race, then by definition they are racist.

Their belief is that all people are more likely to succeed with help. White females are the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action. (source )

Who cares? Yale is a private educational institution, they should be able to choose whoever they want to attend.

So you wouldn't complain if Walmart started to only hire gay black people?

Studies show that minorities who are accepted into higher places of learning through AA usually do just as well as whites.

How about minorities who get their education without help from government? Do they do worse even with education from the same schools?

And why only usually do just as well? Is that because the modern world is stuck in the 50's and still deals minorities a bad hand despite their credentials and experience? Or more so because some of those who get help end up taking the opportunity for granted, especially when they don't have to pay as much as everyone else?

If I was a colored folk, I would surely be offended that the government and other organizations dont think I could succeed with out some sort of special help, but I guess most of the people benefiting from this have had handouts their whole life, its a vicious cycle.

Gladwell is a pretty legit researcher, he's not just some guy spouting off his opinions. He writes about what the data shows and he's way better sourced than a lot of the crap out there that passes for evidence.

I, for one, would visit more often, if just to enjoy the spectacle. :)

Beat me to it :D

LOl those videos are great. I used to live near Berkeley and I would have loved to do something like that.

Here let me make it simple for you. Show me some fucking statistics that prove the point. The fact that an author may (or may not, haven't read the book so I don't know) believe that to be the case doesn't make it correct or incorrect. I'm hoping there were some studies done to back it up, and if so that's what I'm asking for because I've never seen any data to back that up. Does that make sense to you? If I write a book that says all forum posters named Moxie are apologist faggots would you just take it at face value because I put it in print, or would you like to see some data to support the point?

I haven't read the book, but in less time than it took for you to type that, I learned that one of the things referenced is a study about affirmative action at the University of Michigan.

This is a controversial statement and you haven't even at least sourced a book, article or youtube video, yet in the same thread you are angrily demanding detailed statistics for things that rub you the wrong way. That's an interesting double standard you having going on.
