In the spirit of this thread, here's something to think about...
If all traces of anything having to do with what we currently regard as "religion/resulting religious practices/laws/commandments/etc" were somehow erased from earth, and then we all started back at "square one"....
Would everything we currently regard as "religion/resulting religious practices/laws/commandments/etc" be essentially the same? or is there a good chance that there would be something completely different nowadays if we somehow started over? perhaps a different "savior" from a different area, etc...or maybe much larger differences would be readily apparent today...an entirely different background story of Christianity, islam, different accountings of different historical acts, thus different rules we should follow and different "idols" we should not worship, different people we SHOULD worship or lead our lives in respect of and according to, entirely different "morality" scales, etc?
now, using that same idea, think about what would happen if all things currently known as and respected as SCIENCE were erased and we started from square one, day one etc. don't you guys think we would still be in a SIMILAR, yet i'm sure slightly different state of affairs today?
WHY is there a difference between these two things, and WHAT is that difference? i make no claims one way or the other, but logic tells me that science just "IS/EXISTS" and we discover/disprove/reaffirm/test/prove it along the way with increased intelligence and resources available to us as a species. this is to say, science exists OUTSIDE OF and INDEPENDENT OF the current state of the human species and our own goals (whether logical, spiritual, selfish, altruistic, etc...)
Can the same be said for religion?
As I said, I honestly believe there IS stuff out there we don't and may not ever know about, and if people find comfort in religion of different forms I certainly respect that...but I have a hard time believing that modern day Christianity or Islam or any of that is the missing pieces to the puzzle here.
It also saddens me that since so many people believe that true bliss/heaven/etc only exists after they pass away and some people should just "suffer" in various ways to "earn" different afterlife priveledges....this fact makes it tough for those of us that would like to try and take things into our species' hands and attempt to make this planet and people's lives more "heavenly". Maybe achieving "Heaven" on Earth seems pointless when your Heaven is in "afterlife". And PLEASE im not talking down on ALL organized religion here...i think you can see where I'm going with this.
