Ah fuck. Christopher Hitchens just Died.

Can someone point me to an essay in which Hitch logically disproves (or attempts to disprove) the existence of God? If you can, I'd be in your debt.

Someone else pointed it out above, but it really is a case of:

“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”

At best that leaves you not knowing.

Of course Hitchen's response is that in light of [his perception of] this lack of evidence he thinks one should take the step further and make the claim of an Atheist. But when I heard him say that, I thought, isn't that a leap of "faith".

Understanding that he his not a logician clarifies why he is able to get away with emotional appeals to the audience.

I take it you also believe in unicorns, santa, thor and the tooth fairy?

...Hitch was a champion of showing people how utterly stupid they are... How religion poisons everything.

Alcohol and cigarette ingredients are seen by the body as poisons and Hitchens' smoking and heavy drinking are likely causes of the type of cancer he came down with. Just sayin'..

Glad you took the time to address the quote from this "FuckWit". No worries, I keep telling myself to stay out of this thread, this is not really the place for debate, its for remembrance and I no little of Hitchen's and therefore do not belong.

Hitchens would love to see a religious debate here I'm quite sure.

The world has certainly lost a great mind in Hitchens, cancer cant be a nice way to go.

It sickens me to the core how some 'so called christians' seem to get great pleasure out of someone dying, and pretty much proves how much they actually follow their own belief system. YouTube is already full of videos from christians + creationists either basically laughing at the fact the guy is dead, or falsely claiming that he converted to god on his deathbed....

....and we have to listen to their bullshit claiming we get our morals from religion?

If thats your idea of being moral you can shove it up your ass.

I doubt he would love to see it here.

Why? To do so would be to argue for reason...I can't think of a better way to celebrate his life since that's what he devoted it to.

When I die I don't want anybody spending thousands on a casket and funeral service. I'm writing in my will to take that money and throw a huge party, pop bottles in my honor. I'd be fine if people argued about whether or not I'm in heaven or hell...I actually won't care what they hell anybody says because I'll be dead.

If by quote you mean the 'faith' thing, I did answer it, re-read my reply.

Why do so many racist think they are accepted by Jesus? LOL.

Hate + Jesus = Ummmmmm NO.

Segregation

Genesis 28:1
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him,and charged him,and said unto him,Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan (a type of people, not one person).

Deuteronomy 7:1-4, "When the LORD brings you into the Promised Land, He'll cast out the following seven nations (segregation), all greater and mightier than you are: the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And when the LORD God delivers them to you; you shall smite and utterly destroy them (destroy, not push away); you shall make no covenant nor show mercy to them: Neither shall you intermarry (segregation) with them nor let your sons and daughter marry their sons and daughters for they will turn away your sons from following Me (segregation against a tribe of people or nation), to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, to destroy you suddenly".

There's over 3,000 forms of Christianity, so for one person to say that their denomination is correct as opposed to mine, can suck a dick. This is only two verses, but shit I could sit here all day feeding my thoughts through Biblical fact... Let us not forget sodom and Gomorrah and how God burnt and killed the fags - or how he separated everyone by tounge and nation through the tower of babel.

Wow, Dresden, you're into that Old School shit.

I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone though... The new testament was all 'turn the other cheek" and shit while the old book was KILL KILL KILL.

No mystery here which book a nazi would quote from....

Why the fuck are all these Trolls coming out now?

Someone just Died and people here legitimately are sad about it...

Don't we all make fun of & Hate the Westboro Baptist Church fucktards when they all do the Exact same thing?

Trolls on this thread = Westboro Baptist Church fucktards.

Go play on the sun.

There is no god.

You'll be missed, Hitchens.

Everyone taking this chance to personally attack Hitchens is a scumbag. I'm sure your fucking Jesus would love you for it.

I've watched many debates and D'Souza is the only one I've seen come close to being able to debate with Hitchens on this topic.

Whenever someone says they're quoting the Bible then says "...in Deuteronomy" I generally prepare myself for some misogynistic, homophobic, or racist shit.

If you're looking for a great dialog from a theologian check out Alister McGrath
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxc0NpTZE18]Richard Dawkins and Alister McGrath Pt. 1 of 15 - YouTube[/ame] and try being open minded.

Many Atheists here are as dogmatic towards their views as the Christians they attack.

In the spirit of this thread, here's something to think about...

If all traces of anything having to do with what we currently regard as "religion/resulting religious practices/laws/commandments/etc" were somehow erased from earth, and then we all started back at "square one"....

Would everything we currently regard as "religion/resulting religious practices/laws/commandments/etc" be essentially the same? or is there a good chance that there would be something completely different nowadays if we somehow started over? perhaps a different "savior" from a different area, etc...or maybe much larger differences would be readily apparent today...an entirely different background story of Christianity, islam, different accountings of different historical acts, thus different rules we should follow and different "idols" we should not worship, different people we SHOULD worship or lead our lives in respect of and according to, entirely different "morality" scales, etc?

now, using that same idea, think about what would happen if all things currently known as and respected as SCIENCE were erased and we started from square one, day one etc. don't you guys think we would still be in a SIMILAR, yet i'm sure slightly different state of affairs today?

WHY is there a difference between these two things, and WHAT is that difference? i make no claims one way or the other, but logic tells me that science just "IS/EXISTS" and we discover/disprove/reaffirm/test/prove it along the way with increased intelligence and resources available to us as a species. this is to say, science exists OUTSIDE OF and INDEPENDENT OF the current state of the human species and our own goals (whether logical, spiritual, selfish, altruistic, etc...)

Can the same be said for religion?

As I said, I honestly believe there IS stuff out there we don't and may not ever know about, and if people find comfort in religion of different forms I certainly respect that...but I have a hard time believing that modern day Christianity or Islam or any of that is the missing pieces to the puzzle here.

It also saddens me that since so many people believe that true bliss/heaven/etc only exists after they pass away and some people should just "suffer" in various ways to "earn" different afterlife priveledges....this fact makes it tough for those of us that would like to try and take things into our species' hands and attempt to make this planet and people's lives more "heavenly". Maybe achieving "Heaven" on Earth seems pointless when your Heaven is in "afterlife". And PLEASE im not talking down on ALL organized religion here...i think you can see where I'm going with this.
