I am sure we all have looked up domain names that relate to names or even our own personal names. Well I came across a domain that was returning a forbidden message when I went to it. So I sent the contact person on Whois DB an email asking if he knew the domain was returning that and if it was for sale. He response is below. I replaced the site I was inquiring about and the name reference with XXXXX.

I honestly can't see spending more than $50.00 to buy this domain. Am I wrong in offering this price?

What do you all think? I am not going to pay 2,500 for a domain that return a forbidden message and no visitor information.

Yes, I knew that the site is returning that message. There's nothing on the site, and that's the default page.

Whe Whois database should have also indicated that my name is XXXXX. I don't have immediate plans for that domain name, but I was going to keep it until I had the time to develop it ... into ... who knows what. I may soon set it up with Googles "Ad Sense" for parked domains. It's a new feature and it offers parked domains an opportunity to make money ... as an ad portal.

I assume your name is XXXXX. It's fairly cheap to maintain the registration, so I'd have to have a good offer before I'd consider selling. I can't give you an idea of what I'd accept, because I don't have an idea. You're welcome to make an offer. I just sold one of my solar-related domain names for $2500.00 .

Sounds like he'll sit on it until he's given a big offer, and depending on the domain name, that may be a smart move.

Domainers

no you're not being shaken down. either negotiate a price or move on. shaken down, son, you don't know the meaning of shaken down.

Where does he explicitly say he wants $2500? So what if he sold another domain? Maybe it was, you know, more valuable?

Well I am not going to pay what he is asking for. So he can squat on the domain for as long as he wants.

As long as he keeps paying his registration fees.

You have to decide how much you want/need the domain. If you want it, I'd respond back asking how much he wants for it. Then laugh at that number and see if the counteroffer is reasonable.

Unless it's a totally awesome domain and then you're hosed.

And this is how domainers make actual money...
If a site makes enough money to pay annual reg by being parked, they'll sit on it until someone wants to buy it, and then they'll try to get 500x reg fee.

He said "solar" domains, I think I may know who this is: Kevin Sinclair (ksinclair) on DNForum. He's from California I believe.
Any of those details match up with the whois?

You've got two options.
1) Do like radio says and negotiate or walk
2) Ask if you can pay in revshare or installments because you'll be able to make the site generate way more money than he ever could.

^ I was lurking on DNF for quite a while, surely this guy cannot be a very good with his domains if its not even parked. Theres no benefit to just having a Forbidden page and wasting money.. even if theres been very little visitors if this guy was big into the industry he would still have it parked as standard. Email him what you would want to pay, whats the worst that can happen?
