Amazon’s new ad network has a secret weapon against Google AdWords: shopping data

The secret to delivering relevant ads is data. Demographic, psychographic, personal data. Google has data on what we search for, Facebook has data on what we like and share, but Amazon’s data may be the best of all for targeting ads. It has data on what we browse and buy.

That’s why yesterday’s revelations that Amazon is gearing up to launch its own ad network are particularly interesting: Amazon could offer retailers a much-wanted alternative to Facebook and Google ads, and Amazon may prove to be better suited than either of its rivals at putting ads in front of consumers that actually get clicked.....

They're calling the ad network "Amazon Sponsored Links"? Apparently they're getting rid of the Google/third-party ads that are placed on Amazon too with this change: "Like Facebook and Google, Amazon will place its own clients’ ads on its own site."

Any news on whether they'll be building a third party (content) network as well - or if destinations are limited to Amazon pages?

I read the WSJ article and my take was that they are opening or will be opening it up to other website publishers. For example The ads are displayed on the Washington Post.

Be very afraid of Amazon. This will be one more thing to add to the pile of things they do right. Amazon is poised to take over the world over the next few years. Not only do they own product fulfillment, they are taking over books, tv (poorly right now), and the internet.

Google might be able to find anything on the internet; amazon is huge part of the backbone of the internet.

Be afraid, be very afraid. That or you could start buying every share you can afford. By 2020 the face of the tech industry is going to look very different from today. More than likely Amazon will be standing on top of the bloody corpses of many of today's tech "giants."

Is Amazon going to finally allow advertisers to track their ads to see what actually converts?

It's weird you just posted this and then I hear today that Amazon is now acquiring Twitch.tv over Google (as was originally planned/announced a week or two ago). A Letter from the CEO - Twitch

The age of Amazon is coming?

^ Google seems to be getting much much less aggressive on acquisitions.

I think Twitch could possibly be a YouTube killer if people start to prefer streaming instead of videos. It's like live tv vs re-runs.

Google is about to shit the bed and pickup Barnes and noble.

Amazon really is setting themselves up for the future. It's the whole reason they trade at a ridiculous price, with a stupid P/E.

Twitch is nothing like YouTube IMO.

Its more of a platform for gamers to stream their game play.

Game videos are a pretty big chunk of Youtube traffic. If people are watching gameplay on Twitch, that's time not spent watching on Youtube.

I don't really see how they could expand it out of the games niche, but it wouldn't be impossible.

They could do something where you would live watch a series and comment on it in real time. Like how they have hashtags for tv shows but instead it's on one platform ?

Live streamed GoPro footage would be awesome. I would love to watch someone having an adventure in the Alaskan wilderness real time while sitting on my couch with an ice cold beer.
