Amazon unveils new Kindle Fire HD and Paperwhite

Ah, my bad.

I'll still pick them up for my kids. They've got nooks now, and need an update. Prolly stick with my n7 and acer for myself though, and of course my nook touch (can't stand reading for more than a couple minutes on lcd eink ftw).

How are you liking the Nexus 7 for general web browsing and checking emails?

If you are going to get an Android tablet, get the Nexus 7. Jellybean alone makes it worth it.

Is it possible to actually get a hands on look with these devices before purchasing?

They sell them at many retail locations like: Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, Office Depot, Sam's. I know Target used to carry Kindles but they quit due to the Nook I guess.

Edit: looks like Target decided to stop selling Kindles was likely due to "showrooming".

Well.

To be clear though, I rarely use a tablet. When I work I use my desktop, when I game I play xbox, when I read I use my nook. My tablets I pick up now and then, but honestly of all the tech I own they'd be the easiest to not have.

When it's time to replace the PC in our kitchen, I'll definitely move to a tablet. It can be docked and moved around, and making them splash resistant is easy. This is one thing they are fantastic for.

I don't think I've ever spent more than 45 minutes consecutively on a tablet, compare that with 16-20 hours on my notebook/desktop or 10+ hours on xbox (fucking 4 player psuedo splitscreen black ops zombies!).

Which one of these tablets will let me run wifi at home and tether thru my ATT 4g service on the road/in the mountains?

All of them? None of them? Thanks...

All of them should work depending on your phone. If you have an iPhone or a phone running Android you can use it as a wifi hotspot.

Apparently all the new kindle fires will be ad supported and you can't opt out for what it's worth...

...I'd stick with a nexus regardless. The one advantage of the kf is hdmi out, which can be nice if you wanna watch a movie from amazon prime or something.

It probably won't be hard to remove the ads or just install a completely different Android rom. It only took me a few minutes to remove the ads from my Kindle Touch including research time to find out how. Rooting my Android phone for the first time took just slightly longer.

I prefer other tablets instead of this. There are a lot of unknown companies, which make the tablets a thousand times much better than the other known brands.

This is really a must read for all the Kindle Fire HD buyers.

2. Advertising

One thing Amazon didn't mention at its event is that all the new Kindle Fire HD models are going to be ad-supported. Yes, ad-supported.

From the company's press materials:

Special Offers

The new Kindle Fire family comes with special offers that appear on the lock screen. Examples of special money-saving offers that customers will enjoy include a $5 credit in the Amazon MP3 Store and a $5 credit for select titles in the Amazon Instant Video Store. Customers will also receive special offers and screensavers from brands like AT&T, Discover and Intel, such as a special offer of a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card when a customer uses their Discover card to purchase a digital product on Amazon.

Whether or not that's a problem is up to you, but when you're dropping $200 to $500 on a device, you deserve to know it's going to be plastered with ads.

Bottom line

Amazon's new Kindle Fire HD devices certainly have a lot of eye-catching qualities, not least of all their price tags. But slapping on the "game-changer" label and declaring all similar devices "dead" based solely on a corporate presentation seems both silly and sensational.

Android Power TwitterLike the first-gen Kindle Fire model, the Kindle Fire HD tablets provide a distinctly Amazon-centric media experience that has its own set of advantages and drawbacks compared to the regular Android platform. The ultimate question is if that's the kind of experience you want -- and that, my friends, is a question only you can answer.

People are going to be very pissed off, once they drop some dough, and can't turn off the ADs. Obviously, the next model is not going to be as successful, because of previous user experience with these upcoming devices.

No they won't. We did some research on the existing Kindle offers devices, and people with the offer versions were actually -MORE- satisfied with their device, and the value they assigned to their purchase was actually higher.

I've been a Prime member since they beta'd it. Its totally worth it since I order most everything from there. Great for shipping, and even better for movies. Their streaming quality is very solid. I even cancelled my Netflix account to use Amazon exclusively.

Have had amazon prime for a couple years now. The included two-day shipping alone makes it well worth it if you buy a lot on amazon. Living in CR i use amazon for everything. I can usually throw on a instant video tv show for my daugther over vpn + 3g and it plays smooth.

Thanks, just checked my phone and the setting is right there...herp derp.

The personal hotspot will allow you to connect any device with wifi and most likely even via the usb cable.

Kindle fire does not support video or voice chat. That's the only reason I prefer galaxy tab over any kindle fires
