I want to tell you my version of this story. My main job, is doing the middleman. I handle yacht charters. When I first started it 2 years ago, I thought it would be easy, just find a client, push him to the yacht owner, and there you go, you simply profit.
It is simple as a concept, but its not easy to do in reality. Because you want to have control over what passes through you, you have to play "broken phone" all the time, trying to coordinate everything.
And you always have the clients who are simply assholes, and as it was nicely put earlier, "they think they bought a personal butler along with their website". After a year, I found out that those assholes are not worth my time, so I began referring them to my competition. Now I work only with clients and yacht owners that are good to work with, and who are cooperative when shit hits the fan (it happens more often that a fire-mage's critical spell)
Of course, I am not comparing websites to yacht charters, its a wholly different world. But the business model remains the same.
To be honest, I was swamped at the beginning, until I found a cute lady with big boobs (no, I am not posting them) who managed to bring order to my chaos, and organize everything perfectly like clockwork. Common things that were daunting to me, came to her naturally.
You need a team to do this. You need a team to do anything. Find reliable people, double, triple, quadruple your income goals and lay down a plan to achieve them. Dont think its easy though. Treat it the same as internet marketing.
Find a niche, learn it inside out, try to dominate it. There is not much else, the details are irrelevant.
And dont listen to people who are self proclaimed uber/super/duper/guru affiliates.
