Meaning of "well regulated militia"

The term "regulated" means "disciplined" or "trained".[114] In Heller, the U.S. Supreme Court stated that "[t]he adjective 'well-regulated' implies nothing more than the imposition of proper discipline and training."[115]

In Federalist No. 29, Alexander Hamilton suggested that well-regulated refers not only to "organizing", "disciplining", and "training" the militia, but also to "arming" the militia:

Just gloss over the fact that there are already strict regulations, mandatory safety courses, background checks, and it's already illegal for most gun carrying criminals to posses the guns they have. When we already have the things you outlined prohibition is the logical next step.

Go try to legaly buy a firearm, and then come back and tell me I am wrong.

I'll use myself as an example:

I'm in my twenties, running a successful company, covering the expenses of multiple family members, and probably read more books in a month than most Americans read in a year. I have absolutely no fucking idea how to safely use a gun.

In California, I can go to a gun shop, submit for a background check, and take a 30 question written test about guns, something I'm sure I could easily study for in an afternoon. If I pass, in about ten days, I will have a gun in my hands.

I have not received proper training.
I have not been tested on my ability to actually physically handle the gun and ensure that I can safely hold and own it.
I have not been tested on my ability to properly store a gun in a house with other members.

Now what? I just have a weapon that can easily kill myself or others around me because there's no one ensuring I know what the fuck I'm doing.

Imagine this same situation but instead if I were going to get my drivers license right now. To get a license under the age of 18, you need 6 months minimum of driving experience before you can even be tested for a license, and you also need mandatory drivers training courses. Over 18, you still need to pass both a written and driving test that fairly well cover your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

So now I ask, why are we so stringent with drivers licenses but not so with guns?

EDIT: I suppose I'm slightly off here as the gun seller is required to make me do a "safety demonstration with the handgun being purchased" but that is far from a shooting test/safety course/certification.

The "militia" they were referring to in the Constitution was any able bodied white male who could serve on the war lines if need be. These people were expected to supply their own weapons to fight in the war and were also expected to defend their land even if not working directly with a general or leader.

I don't really see how that situation is at all comparable to America today as we have both a standing military and local police forces.

How many tests do you need to take in order to purchase a car?

So you honestly think that the government preplanned two horrible shootings...and put clues to it in a mother fucking Batman movie?

Get this bullshit out of here.

How many tests do you need to take in order to purchase a car?

None. But you can't legally get behind the wheel of it without any of the things I listed above. And without proper registration, once pulled over without said license you're fucked.

Buying a car without a license is not comparable to buying a gun without a license because it's possible to identify unregistered/unlicensed cars on the road. Guns are concealable and you should be required to have the license prior to purchasing the gun.

So do you think the DMV is an unnecessary government agency?

I dunno but I know I just paid $215 for a sticker. I wish my net profits were similar.

Oh I also just paid $160 because I blocked my parents driveway (and forgot about the ticket which was originally $60, for about a month). Of course that money is for the city, but they've got a pretty sweet deal worked out with the DMV.

2nd amendment issues aside, I'm much more interested in hearing dchuk defend his position that some items that have the potential to cause harm to others should be heavily regulated, while other, more harmful items shouldn't be.

I want to know at exactly what point he thinks it's alright for a government to interfere with the rights of it's citizens to freely purchase private property with the fruits of their labor, and why.

So far we've been able to determine that it isn't really about the threat to public safety, because he thinks the regulations we have in place for alcohol are perfectly acceptable as they are, so there must be some other reason.

dchuk?

You can probably find hundreds of these references.

Okay, let's say you say it is bullshit, just coincidences. Then why are kids chanting words: Kite, Hit, Steel, Plane, Must during 9/11:

You have to realize that these ppl believe in spirituality. Doesn't matter if you don't believe in it, they do. They practice it, to ensure what they have planned happens. How? By planting subliminal messages all over.

What's the best way to hide? In plain sight.

So if they can kill 3000 Americans to further their agenda, what makes you think they cannot kill 20 something kids? Is it so outrageous to consider that ppl at the top do not think like you, do not believe what you believe and are satanists?

I think we should have full training courses and safety testing required to obtain a license to purchase and use firearms. Any gun owner should be perfectly fine with this because if they can safely use their guns already they should pass with flying colors, and in order to purchase their guns already they've already had to submit to a background check, thumbprinting, and gun registration.

This in no way prevents anyone from buying and using a gun. It increases the safety and training requirements in order to purchase them.

Do you agree or disagree with what I'm proposing?

Part of the reason might have to do with there being 50 car accident deaths for every 1 gun accident death.

People on medication aren't required to take a class on storage either, but accidental drug overdose deaths are now more common than car accident deaths.

"It’s a stunning statistic: Each day roughly four school busloads of U.S. children – about 165 young kids – are seen in emergency rooms after getting into medications - and each visit is preventable."

Since you are from UK here is something for you to ponder about. Another coincidence. Right after Batman and Robin came out in the London Olympics, guess what we see? James Holmes?

Sure it is easy to dismiss, 1, 2, 3 of these things, but when there are hundreds. Come on. You peasants better wake up and stop watching your stupid TV shows.

You are still skipping over the details. If you want to use that firearm once you leave the store you will need some kind of safety training. It's different everywhere but they exist. It could be in the form of a hunters safety course (mandatory to hunt in most states). Or a training class for a concealed carry permit. That 10 day wait you mentioned (Cali is known for excessive red tape) is meant to serve 2 purposes. 1 to verify your background. 2 as a cooling off period incase you want to kill someone (usually works).

So I get a federal background check I have gotten a minimum of 2 government issued id's stating I can have a gun and can use it. How many more pieces of paper should I get from the government? Do you think bubba got his paperwork for his Uzi? Should the government create a safety course for the bloods and crips ? That way they can use te guns they got from the cartel (supplied by oboma) in a safe manor? Does your plan include an enforcement program to go out and confiscate the bad guys guns?

If you feel that training and education are the solution, I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem with people needing to undergo alcohol education classes, submit to background checks (to look for violent tendencies), and thumbprinting (to assist in identification in the event the alcohol user does commit a crime while under the influence) in order to be licensed to purchase and consume alcohol.

I'll ask you again.

If guns are so harmful and dangerous to the public that they need this sort of regulation, why do we not require people who are going to choose to lower their inhibitions, reaction speed, and judgement capabilities by imbibing alcohol to undergo the same scrutiny?

Alcohol is more dangerous and it's sales are less regulated than firearms, yet you do not have a problem with that. So you can't be arguing for public health, I want to know what you are arguing for?

Why guns?

Is it the way they look?

The fact that they are more apparently violent?

Perhaps it's the fact that people sometimes intentionally use guns to hurt others, while users of alcohol manage to do all of their killing without motive.

I think that's it, I think you have a problem with the idea that some people want to hurt other people sometimes.

Good luck legislating your way out of that.
