Fellow britfag here,

I'm on the verge of leaving this land to go try living somewhere warmer and cheaper (than here). I have no commitments and can work from a laptop so why the fuck am I living here?

Also, if anyone has income tax advice (i.e. reducing it) then that would be appreciated. I will not be in the UK for more than 2-3 weeks a year, for the foreseeable future. I'm struggling to find anything solid on what I've read previously, that if you're not resident in the UK then you may not pay income tax. I dont mind moving about if it means avoiding it.

Also any recommendations on brit friendly destinations appreciated.

Don't know the exact british tax rules, but I assume they're not on fuckt up american level, so what you'll want to do is move out officially, open a hk company and account, pay zero taxes, insure yourself worldwide and head for Bali, Philipines or Thailand in Asia.

Don't know about South and Central America but many like Colombia.

Hey Adam, sounds like a good idea! I left UK 3.5 years ago to work in Singapore, think at the time I read if you're not resident for more than 90 days in the year then you're not liable for any income earned overseas, which is perfect as you can hang around for the summer and fuck off when it gets cold again! I used a tax reclamation company to inform HMRC I was leaving the country and I actually got £1000 back which was nice!

Obviously you have to incorporate abroad, HK/Labuan/Singapore etc I would stay outside the EU in case UK gets desperate in the future as they are more or less bankrupt, one of the reasons I left...£ has lost ~50% of its value against the Singapore dollar in the last few years so looks like I made the right decision :)

As for destinations, I left Singapore a few months ago its great but expensive compared to the rest of SE Asia and gets boring after a while. Been to Philippines a few times but Internet is too flakey in all the nice remote places (maybe Boracay is the exception but its more pricey), and the cities are too filthy/polluted for me personally. I'm trying out Bali now been here a month already, love the place but again Internet is painfully slow so it's frustrating to get any work done when you have to wait forever for a web page to load, kills your productivity a bit, I'm not staying in the town centre though maybe it's faster there...I hear Thailand is much better I'm headed there next in a month or so, give me a shout if you make it out here I'm coming back to Europe for the summer though...good luck you won't regret it, best decision I ever made.

incorporate in Belize, only need an office, no taxation/vat whatsoever for foreign companies.. loads of info in google.

Bangkok is insane for the heat even worse than Singapore, Chiang Mai is supposed to be cooler though guess ill find out in a few weeks...

The UK economy is a real concern, as my revenue is from UK retailers, *hoping* it doesnt kill my income too much when shit hits the fan.

Thailand appeals cost of living wise, but the heat is a worry! is it really that bad? I had a few days in Hong Kong once with high humidity and it was a bit uncomfortable. I've also been in the Australian outback at 40+ but it wasnt as bad as I was expecting.

Belize I looked at before, is it a viable place to live? I think the crime stats put me off a little.

You'll hear people complaining more about the heat right now, because the hot season just started up 2 or 3 weeks ago, so it's fairly new. Lasts 4 or 5 months. If you have an extra couple hundred to spend per-month on your electric bill to keep the ACs going, then no, it's not too bad at all. :)

But yeah, it can be pretty unbearable. It's not so much the day-to-day heat itself, but there's just no escaping it for months, so after a few weeks of it that can play on your mind. I seem to be coping pretty well this year, but I think that's mainly because for about the past month I've only really eaten salads and veggie stirfrys. Definitely not steak & potato weather.

As mentioned above, Chiang Mai is several degrees cooler. Other plus is the hot part of the day seems shorter. Instead of it being unbearable from 11am - 10pm, in Chiang Mai it seems to be around 11am - 4pm, and the hot part of the day is over.

head for Bali, Philipines

Wait, so you're critical of poverty in places like Africa and Detroit, but also are advising people to go live in countries where the average incomes are lower than in nearly 20 African nations?

You can't be srs

You're trollin

I imagine a place Bali gets more tourists than those places you've mentioned. Average income has little to do with this.

I think a lot depends on your level of income and of course your tastes. For us to simply answer with "Brit friendly" locations is pointless; just find out where your passport allows you to go and that's pretty much your best answer.

Are you young, loaded, and like the nightlife & beach scene? Or are you a miserly old grumpus into history and bedtime at 8pm? Are you going to try to invest there? Does distance from the UK matter?

Also, are you libertarian-minded at all? Would you want this destination to be one of more freedom than usual? -All important input here. Spill it.

I was responding to someone who has given the impression that they would avoid the entire continent of Africa like the plague, based on it not being developed enough and such. One way to measure that is by looking at income levels. Another would be poverty levels. Well, Indonesia and Philippines have about 20% of their people living on under $1.25 a day, which is also worse than in much of Africa.

No place is the same all over, but that is part of my point, as that also applies to Africa.

Africa had 50 million tourist visitors in 2011. It has fancy resort type areas, many along the 1,000s of miles of coastline.

Nigeria has lots of poverty, but at the same time two of the richest people in the world live and were born there. For $2 million you can buy an apartment in their neighborhood.

its a few degrees cooler on the islands as well and there are lots more brits around. as for money, get an offshore account and sign nonresident agreement with uk tax office, its a simple one page form. remember work of any kind is technically illegal in thailand without the right visas so keep your mouth shut, head down and have a good time. if you make it here on your travels look me up i'm on koh samui

Moxie is mad cause even Cambodja is ten times safer than Detroit and with no 'sheeeiiiiittt' city council.

Btw, don't go to Thailand atm, the heat really is insane even at night.
