I've never gone to one of these things but have been on their mailing list. The topic is affiliate marketing via SEO and the speaker is Sugar Rae (she's supposed to be hot shit from what I gather).

It's billed as not being guru crap but all guru crap claims to be different so I don't know what to expect. If any other locals are going let me know and we can grab a drink before/after.

if Sugar rae is speaking I'd go if I were you. She is fucking awesome and super smart. I wish I were in Tx because I'd be all over that shit

...and I'll Paypal you $20 is you take notes of the good stuff and post it in Traffic & Content for all of us

She's an affiliate, I've seen some of her sites and from what I gathered, she's got some crazy authority high traffic sites she's built over the years.

Bumping for any other Dallas locals that missed this yesterday. Looks like Scheme and myself will be there tonight.

Wish I could meet up with you guys but there is no way to make it from Fort Worth by 6:30pm in any reasonable amount of time. Maybe we could do our own meetup in Arlington some other time?

justo, scheme, take good notes and lots of pictures!

Ya the "girl on the internets" serp bonus is amazing. Enjoy the remarkable insights into how great the Thesis theme is, ya marks.

Will do. And we should look at doing a meetup maybe after Halloween.

Jcash: I don't think that's her. That's the lady she interviewed.

Justo: after Halloween sounds good... let's set a date!

Hola from Ft Worth!

I can't make it tonight, but would be up for a post-halloween meetup.

jcash makes a good point, but I got over the guru thing when I started following Mixergy.

Ultimately, the value of the content isn't about the presenter or the audience, and anyone who judges information in a superficial way like that isn't going to be able to take advantage of opportunities.

Like her or not, like gurus or not, that event sounds like an opportunity to network and develop opportunities with other local participants at the very least.

Yeah, networking is why I am going. I don't really give a fuck about what they chick has to say and I swear to god if she trys to sell me something I am going to piss on the carpet and punch a mom blogger in the tit.

How was the meeting?

It was okay, the networking was where it was at though.

JCash was right, Copyblogger mentioned once, Genesis and Thesis mentioned several times, if it would have been a drinking game I would have maybe had a little buzz but she wasn't pitching either.

The crowd seemed to be mostly social media/SEM "consultants", corporate SEOs, a few agency types and probably too many WaFos. If there were any other WickedFirers aside from Scheme and myself we didn't cross paths with them.

There was the typical backstory shtick about SR's history in the biz. Everybody in the room claimed to know what aff marketing was so mercifully the overview of what AM is was skipped.

Bullet points of what she hit on (her opinion only naturally):
  • White hat only since about 2006 (up to you if you believe it)
  • She showed rev numbers from one of her more profitable sites: ~$20K gross monthly / ~$18.5K net for a review site. Mostly CPS (CJ/GAN/LS + a little adsense).
  • She has had a serious boner for review sites for several years, didn't touch on whether that has changed post-Panda
  • Covered lots of basics anybody that pays attention in WF already knows, maybe new (or validation) to some of the corp types/WaFos.
  • Google Keyword tool is mostly crap for determining search volume but validates niche by seeing how many advertisers are operating in it.
  • Expired domains have domain aids regardless of age/backlinks. She buys neglected properties a few pages down in serps by contacting the owner. Flippa, forum sales, etc... are all no buys.
  • Blogs are for "propping" up of the main LP, if blogs are your LP u b doing it rong!
  • EMD targeting only is lazy. She targets a hybrid of brandable/keyword-in-domain
  • Target niches that can expand both horizontally and vertically.
  • Generally not a google anal fan but doesn't swear it off totally either.

A couple things I thought were interesting:
  • Her $20K authority site ranks extremely well (fluctuates between 3-5 per her) for terms she can't monetize. (She didn't mention if that was due to effort to build authority/trust or a by product of achieved authority)
  • Authority sites have to have terms spelled correctly if you don't want to look like a dumb ass, but user generated content (like comments) can be used to bring in long tail misspellings.
  • Unique tools, think mortgage calculators or other types of interactive utility, bring links and traffic.
  • Despite numerous mentions of genesis/thesis themes the 20K money site was built on a custom CSM and not on WordPress. <speculation>She said it was due to age and not being worth the hassle to move to WordPress, but another comment later in the talk about shifting advertisers in and out spaces based on CPS makes me think it was more about controlling the sales funnel.</speculation>

yea I've gotten over the guru thing as well. For me at this point, I'm happy if I can get ONE tiny insight on something and I can take it from there.

As for Mixergy, I've been a member there for a couple weeks now and have gone through most of it. Some good stuff in there. I really liked machinecontrol's thing on media buying. I thought the Facebook one by that agency guy was weeeeak though
